Default CAT Quantitative Aptitude by Erudite

I am unable to see any kind of math thread, so lets start a Quantitative thread for the CAT aspirants, you can answer my questions as well as post your own questions we will try to solve them together.

So lets start from the

Question of the day

Q. More than twenty years ago, Sandy asked his grandfather who was celebrating his birthday that day: "How old are you now?" His grandfather smiled and said: "Add the digits of my year of birth and multiply the answer by 4." When Sandy started looking confused his grandfather immediately added, "By the way, this trick also works with the year we have on the calendar now." What was grandfather’s age?

Q. In the morning a green-grocer puts 200 kg tomatoes outside in front of his shop. These tomatoes consist for 99% out of water. Because it is a warm day some water will evaporate. As a result, at the end of the day the tomatoes consist for 98% out of water. How many kg's of these tomatoes are left at the end of the day?

A number has 6 different digits. If the last digit is moved to the front, then a new number is formed which is exaclty 5 times the old number. With which number did we start?

Q. Four friends are on one side of a bridge. They have to cross over to the other side. There is no light on the bridge and it is dark. They can only cross safely if they have some light. Together they carry only one torch. Unfortunately this torch only gives enough light for two people to walk safely. Each friend has a different walking pace than others. The fastest of them can cross bridge in 1 minute, the next one in 2 minutes, the third in 5 minutes and the slowest of them all in 10 minutes. If two friends are on the other side of the bridge, one has to go back to give the torch to the others. If the friends cross over to the other side as quickly as possible, how much time does it take them in total?

How should you cut a measuring tape of 40 cm into four parts such that you can measure any lenght of an integer from 1 cm to 40 cm (so 1 cm, 2 cm, 3 cm, 4 cm, ..... 39 cm and 40 cm) on a balance?

a grocer uses weighing balance in which one pan weighs 0.5 kg and other 0.75 kg. He puts a certain quantity of food grains in 0.5 kg pan and finds weight as two digit number. However, as customer insists, he puts it in 0.75 kg pan. Now, the indicated weight is 9.5 kg more than weight which is obtained by reversing the digits of previous weight.
which of the following cannot be the actual weight??
1) 43.25
2) 36.25
3) 41.50
4) 32.25
5) more than one of these

I have a suggestion which indicate the trick to find the solution

20 years age the calender year is 2010-20=1992

The trick will also wok in the year 1992

So,
1+9+9+2=21
Therefore Year of birth=1938
age=54
