I have tried the sony reader and its awesome. According to me ipad will easily beat sony e reader as ipad's function is dual hower e book's is single

Somehow almost everyone fails to understand while comparing all these devices – and what they will inevitably realize while actually using them – is that size does matter. (size of screen)

thr is always a threshold in screen size. Go below – you’ve got a pocket computer, hopefully with a working phone. Go above and you’ve got a laptop in its raw form (something that fits on your lap).

Either would serve different purposes, either may or may not serve as a partial replacement for another.

Here is a comparison

1 Kindle is a dedicated device but if you buy an iPad you get a whole new companion that can do pretty much anything. Games, movies, browsing, documents ...all in one.

2 The screen - Full color, multi touch screen ... pleasure to hold (sorry kindle)

3 Compatibility - iPad supports ePub out of the box, overcoming publishers’ resistance to having to support a proprietary format such as Kindle’s.

4 The iBooks store - Apple has captured the magic of shopping. Apple always goes beyond to create an experience.

5 The price - For $10 more than a Kindle DX, consumers get an incredible ebook reader and much more ,a device that they can use for pretty much anything.

I dont think its wise to compare them as they are totally different from each other. There are only 2-3 functions of ebook whereas there are more than 10 function of Ipad.

Mr Sanjay,
Even if we don't compare, wouldn't it be wise to have all these features instead of a dedicated device when their's a marginal gap b/w the Cost price of these gadgets...

What is an Ipad?

Ipad is a tablet computer developed by Apple Inc. It falls between the category of a smartphone and laptop. Smartphone is a type of phone with advanced capabilities. It is more advanced than ipod and iphone and runs with the same operating system i.e. Iphone OS.
Its screen is 9-7 inch long with LED backlit display with a pixel resolution of 1024 X 768. It has 16 – 64 GB of flash memory.

What is an Sony Reader?

The Sony Reader is an ebook reader manufactured by Sony . It uses an electronic paper display. It is viewable in direct sunlight, requires no power to maintain a static image, and is usable in portrait or landscape orientation. It also can display Adobe PDFs, epub format, personal documents, blogs, RSS newsfeeds, JPEGs, and Sony's proprietary BBeB ("BroadBand eBook") format. The Reader can play MP3.

Features
Its clear that Ipad is just a small form of computer which is portable and can be used as a laptop or as a smartphone while Sony reader is just a portable ebook which uses a system of electronic paper display and is used for reading books anywhere, anytime. It’s mainly used to read books however it also provides photo viewing, Mp3 etc for entertainment.
Ipad has many advantages over ebook. The biggest is that ebook serves only in viewing book but Ipad include book reading as its secondary function. Other than book reading it serves as web browsing, gaming, photo viewing etc. Its just like a normal computer with landscape view or portrait view. Ipad can be used in many other activities. Physically both Ipad and ebook are similar in structure and size. However it seems that Ipad is more advanced than ebook reader. Both come with touch screen models. The backlit LED property is only Ipad. It has its own advantages and disadvantages. Due to its LED backlit property it is possible to work with it in dark rooms however to work with it in sunlight is a painful job. The LED backlit property is harmful for eyes too. This property is not present in Sony ebook. Due to this it is easy to read in sunlight and can be read inside house too but only when it is not dark. But still LED backlit property is needed in Ipad as it functions as a smartphone or we can say that as a laptop(as it is still not clear in which category it falls). However the property is not at all needed in Sony ebook reader as its main function includes book reading which requires continuous reading that can damage the eyes if the LED backlit property is there. Regarding battery life sony ebook leads as its battery life is 6 days however ipad’s is just 10 hours. Graphicwise Ipad’s graphic are far far better than ebook’s due to it’s backlit property. The performance given by ipad is considered best out any multitouch devices. Its performance is good just because of the quality of its battery. Both models come in 3G from and includes Wi-Fi. Audio of both the models is of good quality. Ipad rules in the number of accessories. There are wide range of accessories. .

Problems
So far many minor problems have arised on ipad and ebooks. However it is predicted that there could be a problem with ipads battery and there could be a problem in ebooks quality. Since Ipad provides many big functions, it seems that the battery wouldn’t be able to take load. Regarding ebook many people ask question over its quality. Many have raised questions over its qualities. Ebook does not have LED backlit property which makes it hard to read in dark rooms. It has a problem in syncing as it sometime duplicates books that it syncs. It sometimes hangs when a large PDF is synced. These are some common problems with ebook. Problems with ipad will be noticed only after its launch.

Price
The price of Apple ipad is 600$ while that of the ebook is 300$. However the price seems right as Apple provides many features with it comparatively to ebook.

Its crystal clear that there are many functions of Ipad comparatively to ebook. And that makes it a better device than ebook.

I believe these two categories things are quite different:
ipad is a multi-function, highly portable computing device. While Sony e-book and Amazon Kindle are dedicated e-book readers. Can you compare On the very same lines, can you compare a tablet which has dialer feature (Samsung Galaxy Tab) and a cellphone? IMO, you can't . Both things are meant for different usage.
