TopMBA.com Survey of MBA Applicants 2006
QS Research 1990-2006

3.2.2 Marital Status

The typical MBA applicant is still single, 77% (76%), and has no children, 87% (87%). However, there are significant differences between men and women. 73% of men are single and 84% of women. 84% of men have no children and 93% of women. These figures
confirm the greater difficulties perceived for women in combining professional / educational and domestic responsibilities.

3.2.3 Professional Background

The trend continues for MBA applicants to have a lower average length of work experience, now down to 3.9 years (4.5) (5 years).

The top five areas of current employment for people considering an MBA remain broadly stable with only engineering increasing:

  • Information technology 17% (17%) ((13%))

  • Financial services and banking 15% (15%) ((17%))

  • Consulting 11% (11%) ((13%))

  • Engineering 10% (8%) ((6%))

  • Industry 6% (no previous figures due to new categorisation)

These findings clearly indicate the continuing revival in employment opportunities in IT, consulting, financial services and banking and a renewed popularity of an MBA for engineers.

The numbers of men and women currently employed varies by sector (Top 5):

Men: Information Technology 21%; Financial Services and Banking 14%; Engineering 12%; Consulting 11%; Industry 7%.

Women: Financial Services and Banking 16%; Consulting 11%; Information Technology 11%; Consumer 7%; Engineering 6%.
