4.2 EUROPE

INSEAD and, following closely, London Business School (LBS), remain the two most popular business schools with recruiters, benefiting from the enduring recovery in consulting and banking. Spanish, Italian, Belgian and some Dutch and German schools, which are succeeding in attracting more recruiters, are making notable progress.
The Central European University Business School (CEU) in Hungary, moving up 12 places to 18th, is the first Central/Eastern European institution to feature in the top-20. IESE and IE - Instituto de Empresa are two Spanish schools, which have shown a strong increase in performance in the last few years, featuring among the top-10 European schools. They are joined this year by a third Spanish school, ESADE, which moves up five places to 7th.

Overall, the European table of recruiter preferred schools shows considerable movement. Diversity and fluidity is the watchword in 2006. In the past two years, many European-based schools, new to the recruiter preference tables, are emerging as strong players. Vlerick Leuven Gent Management School up nine at 16th and Solvay Business School, UniversitÁ Libre de Bruxelles, up eight at 17th both set a trend indicating interest from recruiters in MBAs from Benelux. The University of St. Gallen is the only Swiss school to feature, just dropping out of the top-20 by four to 22nd.

New in the top-40, Universiteit Maastrict Business School at 21st, brings to three the number of Dutch schools, alongside Rotterdam School of Management Erasmus University, which, still keeps in the top-10 at 9th and Nyenrode University. A second German school, Stuttgart Institute of Management and Technology also appears for the first time at 32nd, to join WHU Otto Beisheim Graduate School of Management. Altogether, there are six new schools among the top-40. IBS Moscow, at 35th is the first Russian school to feature.

It is several years now since renowned universities such as Oxford and Cambridge developed MBA programmes and this trend was followed across Europe at universities such as Mannheim, MIP Politecnico di Milano, Copenhagen and Stockholm School of Economics. These schools moved up the recruiter preference tables quite rapidly in recent years, doubtless profiting from the already existing name awareness of their universities with recruiters. With the exception of MIP Politecnico di Milano, which moves up an impressive 17 places to 19th, and Judge Business School Cambridge that holds its 14th place, many of these have fallen several places this year in the face of competition from so many new movers.
