Job Description:

Reporting to: - Group Lead - Equity Research.
Team Overview: - The Equity Research Team of the company in Bangalore is a part of the BA&R Group in India. The team was started in August 2006, and has continually grown since then. Sector Specialists provide equity research support to more than 20 research analysts in Boston and London, covering both US and International markets. Some of the sectors covered are telecoms, utilities, financials, healthcare and consumer.
Roles & Responsibilities: - The Lead Sector Specialist will manage a team of 3-5 Sector Specialists. The combined team will support about 6-12 research analysts in Boston / London at any time. The Lead Sector Specialist is expected to support some of the research analysts in Boston / London directly.
Some examples of equity research projects undertaken by the Sector Specialists in Bangalore are: -

  • Creating long term demand supply models within sector and deriving forecasts on capacity, market share, capital investments, pricing, etc.

  • Business cycle analysis to identify turning points in industry.

  • Creating industry databases, and analyzing them for trends.

  • Construction of indices for select market segments. Calculating relative performance of such indices or stocks vs. market. Identification of key factors which may drive relative performance, and testing them with data.

  • Relative valuation for stocks and indices in a sector. Developing valuation dashboards for a sector.

  • Developing and maintaining sector overview sheets.

  • Ad-hoc projects with their research analysts, developing insights into their sectors through topical research issues.

  • The candidate should be able to set standards of research for quality, thoughtfulness and timely delivery and drive the team towards the same. He should be able to manage client relationships in multiple client offices, and ably represent the Bangalore Team in multiple forums.

  • The Lead Sector Specialist will regularly coach, mentor, train and develop his team members.

  • The Lead Sector Specialist will integrate with other research teams in the company to expand the team’s expertise and contribute meaningfully to company's knowledge of select sectors.

  • Some travel to Boston / London is expected.

    Candidate Profile:

    Education: - Candidates from Tier 1 or 2 Institutes only (IIMs, ISB-Hyderabad, XLRI-Jamshedpur, FMS-Delhi, SP Jain-Mumbai, JBIMS-Mumbai, MDI-Gurgaon, NITIE-Mumbai, TAPMI-Manipal, XIM-Bhubanswar, SIBM-Pune, NMIMS-Mumbai OR from US / Europe / Top Asian MBA institutes.
    Experience: -

  • 6-9 years experience in investment research, including at least 3 years in equity research.

  • Understanding of equity markets - sectors, constituents, drivers, dynamics, trends and indicators - is expected. Knowledge of some specific international sectors is desirable.

  • At least 2 years experience in building a team, giving direction, managing internal customer expectations and delivering results through a team is required.
    Required / Preferred Skills: -

  • The role requires frequent use of concepts in US GAAP accounting, economics, statistics, financial markets, financial statement analysis, ratio analysis and industry analysis.

  • Knowledge of some specific international sectors is desirable.

  • The role requires a high degree of co-ordination and communication with the US - some amount of cross-border experience is essential.

  • This position is expected to work directly and closely with senior management and must be able to think, act and respond accordingly.

  • The Lead also anticipates potential issues and is able to both resolve and/or collaborate to resolve an issue. This position is expected to make decisions that are aligned with the team’s values, goals and strategies.

  • The role is largely self-driven and self-managed, with minimal supervision on a day-to-day basis.

  • Candidates are required to have a high degree of professionalism, integrity, commitment and energy.
