Abstract
Our industry is mainly deeply penetrated in finance, banking, insurance, communications (35%) and manufacturing (12%). What sort of learning is provided when the services oriented Indian software sector is geographically dispersed and consists of small independent firms? In order to build long term partners rather than providers of project specific solutions strategies
would have to include exploiting new IT areas such as internet, creating niche products for both the domestic (much has to be done here like Silicon Valley (SV)) & World markets, integrating Software & Hardware in embodied IT products & spinning off technologies developed mainly for defense/space, Genetics & Biotechnology complex in to commercially successfully products.
The fact that most Indian firms provide services to fortune 500 companies is a cause for both celebrating and somber introspection as Indian exporters are very small in comparison to their renowned clients. Indian firms are at the juncture of strategically moving up the software value chain. To accomplish this, two concerted efforts will be critical: an emphasis on technological & commercial learning & a supportive intuitional environment to encourage dynamic expansion.
Better Management Through Best Practices
The good news about adopting best practices is that corporations aren't limited to one method. The bad news is that companies will most likely need to adopt more than one best-practice framework - or at least parts of many - if they want a complete, effective set of management process guidelines. Best-practice frameworks such as IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) and Control Objectives for Information and Related Technology (COBIT) have been around for years.
For the most part, these frameworks should bring consistency and efficiency to the various aspects of IT, such as application development, help desk, network operations, security, and service delivery and support.
