MBA - Why do it?

Apr 09,2010

They say, you learn more from your mistakes. My 'gyan' on why one should do an MBA comes from my 'no gyan' when I decided to do it, or even when I did it!

Ask me and I would say don't do an MBA if you don't know what it means to you, if you don't know how it adds value to your self / career, if you think it's just a big bait to fish out a well paying job.

No, that's not it! Why do you think companies would want to hire MBAs? They want your ability to see the bigger picture in aspects concerning the company. They want you to analyze where they stand, what they are capable of, where they can get to, how soon they can get there, why certain things do not happen the way they should, and what is to be done to make them happen. In short, they want you to lead the way.

Now you may think that this is not a real world situation and all jobs don't throw this kind of experience.

Like, when I was handling retail banking operations in ICICI, I was responsible to handle teams that processed checks and opened accounts. I never saw the big picture when I started off. I was frustrated. Was that why I did an MBA? Slowly I realized, the catch was in visualizing the large scenario in smaller ones, and relate it to other scenarios, and then think from the company's point of view. It was fun, real fun, because then you started realizing that you, of course, could make a difference to your company. Then I knew why those case studies were a relevant part of my course!

You need to go in there with a perspective. Well, this applies to anything you do. But your ability to see the big picture is the very crux of this two year rigorous course. It's not just your content, but how you present it, how you can make people relate to it; not just about numbers, but how you apprehend them; not about selling products or services, but selling yourself.

Now what I just said may have many counter arguments. I myself can think of at least seven of them. But my point is not whether or not you should do an MBA, but if you are doing it, you better know why you should do so, and then do it well. And this again holds true for anything you do.

                                                                                                                                                                                               Concluded.

Damn...this is real gyan. What do you mean "They ......... the way", blah blah blah. Was looking for some real life gyan not text book stuff, which is being told a million times.

No offense but the entire article is waste of time to read just full of test book kind buzz words.

Thank you so much for the information. It has helped me clear out my mind substantially. Now that i've decided to do MBA, after looking at various colleges i've narrowed down to IndSearch, Pune. The reason i chose this college was because it is an Autonomous Institute under the Pune University and the degrees are also awarded by the university which solves a lot of my problems.

HI..
I am an engineering student, currently in III rd year. I took engineering as a career because I was interested in Electronics. I now wish to pursue a career in MBA. But a relevant question comes to my mind which seems valid:'Why MBA after Engg.??'
So my question is does MBA makes any sense for an engineering student???

admin on 10/24/10 at 04:57 pm

if you see profile of students in any of the IIM, almost 90% are engineers. Everybody si just going for MBA.

Now why engineers do better in MBA or why they go for it is simple because MBA gives you faster growth and money.

Guest on 09/09/11 at 01:15 pm

Hey, I am doing Mechanical and automation engineering from IGIT. I wanted to know if this engg is fine in terms of avenues , growth and money. Or is CSE better. i am not interested in MAE but i in any case dont like egg. I am doing it just because i like science and technical stuff and i dont want to be a doctor.... Plz tell me which field would be best for me. which gives me growth, interest and most importantly money...And if i am good at engg, should i do an MBA? Wont i get jobs in the technical area if i do an MBA?

Guest on 09/09/11 at 01:51 pm

Hi, MBA after engineering is one of the most promising career these days. I have no idea about the different streams in engineering, but can say that MBA after engineering is highly rewarding. If you take a close look at the batch profiles of IIMs and leading non-IIM b-schools, you will know that majority of them are engineers
IIM Class Profile 2011: Educational Background
Non-IIM Class Profile 2011: Educational Background

guest on 09/10/11 at 07:51 pm

But what will MBA give me? Money? Can i get jobs in the technical stream after doing MBA at higher pay package then people normally get?

Guest on 09/12/11 at 12:44 pm

Hi
An MBA degree from a leading b-school promises to give you all comforts of life which can be bought :). It is highly paying in terms of money and a lavish lifestyle, provided you are hard working.
You can definitely get job in technical stream after doing MBA...and can get higher pay package, as MBA degree will add a business acumen to your technical knowledge. You can chose IT as your specialization
