GD Topic: Narendra Modi refuses to wear skull cap

 | September 20,2011 12:46 pm IST

Narendra Modi, who is often seen donning a red turban over his head, refused to wear skull cap—Muslims’ traditional headgear, offered by maulana Hazrat Sufi Iman Sahi Sayeed Mehendi Husain. "I wanted to felicitate Modi after hearing about the 'sadbhavna' mission fast.

I offered him the cap, but he said he would not wear it. I think he feared wearing a skull cap may dent his image," maulana told The Economic Times.

BJP dismissed the incident saying that it is not an issue. "Narendra Modi has clearly said his policy is not to appease any section of society unlike other parties. Our approach is development for all and treating everyone equal,'' party spokesman Vijay Rupani told ET. "Thousands of members of the minority community have come here but nobody insisted that Modi put on a skull cap. This is a non-issue which is being turned into a big one by our opponents."

this is a such a rude behavior by a very senior leader. there was no harm in wearing the cap offered by maulana...at least mr modi should have respected his sentiments...cap n turban are considered as a sign of respect and honor in our country and i personally consider it as a respectful gesture if someone offers a headgear to other person.

Dear Ritu

I agree with you. If Mr Modi wore that skull cap it would be a proof of real "sadbhavna" which do not believe in religion and cast.

And it will surely not harm Modi mission as mentioned by BJP "Narendra Modi has clearly said his policy is not to appease any section of society unlike other parties. Our approach is development for all and treating everyone equal"

Its like asking a maulana to wear saffron clothes with a tilak on his forehead. Media shouldn't highlight unnecessary issues. It would be better to show a list of convicts in the riot proceedings and number of cases solved. Personal vilification wouldn't serve any purpose.

Mr modi is no maulana neither a saint. he is a politician, face of masses, who was on a sadbhavna mission
