Personal Interview tips by IIM Indore student

 | May 30,2011 06:39 pm IST

Anshul Jain, PGDM student at IIM Indore (2010-12), narrates his personal interview experience at IIM Indore. Unlike other b-schools, IIM Indore does not conduct group discussion to short list students.

IIM Indore uses a psychometric test in addition to essay writing on current affairs. 15 minutes are allotted to write the essay and 5 minutes are allotted to complete 50 questions psychometric test.

My essay writing topic was “Role of women in corporate world”. We were 10 students in the group and we were given 15 minutes to write the essay. The time was sufficient enough to write a nice comprehensive essay.

Q. How did you prepare for the interview?

Joined GD/PI capsules of TIME and CL

Q. How many interview calls did you get and from which institutes? How many and which ones of these could you actually convert to a final call?
Got calls from IIM B/L/I; could convert only Indore

Q. Can you tell us about the panel that interviewed you?
The panel had 2 professors – One HR faculty and other from Strategy area

Q. How long was your interview?
Interview went between 12 – 15 minutes approx.

Q. What kind of questions were you asked? Were they specific to any particular area?

My interview was mainly in 2 parts. The first part consisted of questions asked by HR Faculty. They were all related to essay topic we were given. The questions pertained to Role of women in corporate world and I was asked why was that the case compared to developed world etc etc

Second set of questions were purely academics based. The faculty from Strategy area chose 3 courses from my grade sheet and asked me questions from them. One observation was that he would ask in-depth questions in the course which he perceives you are strong in; e.g. I being working in Core Chemical field, he went at length in asking me whole of boiler design and its intricacies.

Q. What were the first question, the most interesting question, and the most difficult question?
First question was “tell us something about yourself”

Most interesting question “how did your interviews with Bangalore and Lucknow go” as I was a bit taken aback by the amount of research they had done before the interview about which all calls I had got.

Most difficult questions were academics based from courses which I had studied 4-5 years ago

Q. While facing the panel, were you confident, did you feel prepared?

I was a bit unconfident as I had heard during interviews of other candidates that they were asking a lot of academic based questions which I had not prepared well as I thought that after having 4 years of workex, they will ask me mainly work related questions rather than acad based. Luckily, it went well for me.

Q. Write a brief about your Interview experience.

My interview was mainly in 2 parts. The first part consisted of questions asked by HR Faculty. They were all related to essay topic we were given. The questions pertained to Role of women in corporate world and I was asked why was that the case compared to developed world etc etc

Second set of questions were purely acad based.

On the whole, it was a nice discussion, especially with the HR faculty. He appeared to be stern and serious and was quite vocal with what he thought about my answers.

Q. Give some handy tips regarding interview that would be of great help to MBA aspirants.

Try talking to other aspirants before your interview. This would help you relax and lessen your anxiety. Also, never try to write or learn the basic interview questions by heart, only structure your thoughts. This would save you from looking artificial in front of the panel.
