A PLACEMENT REPORT CARD
While the placement process has stayed much the same, students are less easily swayed by big offers and are instead demonstrating a stronger commitment to a chosen sector or function, said Saral Mukherjee, in charge of the placement committee at IIM-Ahmedabad. For instance, an investment bank recently showed up on the campus three weeks after recruitments had begun. Around 200 students, who had already been placed, were given an option to apply for the top-dollar jobs on offer, but only 18 pursued this option. The accompanying graphics provide a synopsis of how top B-schools have fared over the last half decade in placing their students, based on data released by the B-schools to CoolAvenues. IIM-Ahmedabad wasn’t ready with its report on 2011 placements and salaries at the time of going to press. News reports earlier this year referred to investment banks and consulting firms offering salaries that are one-fifth higher than last year at IIM-Ahmedabad, and that students at the Indian School of Business have been hired for the highest salaries this year. No wonder then that a large majority of MBA students are opting for professional careers over entrepreneurship. According to the 2011 CoolAvenues B-school placement survey across India, some 55 students opted out of placements out of 2,918 students in the 10 B-schools surveyed.

lacements at the top business schools across India have stayed neutral to economic cycles for the most part and have consistently lived up to the expectations of most students. What has changed over the last five to 10 years is the increasing number of students per batch and the number of companies visiting the campuses. Also, the average age of graduating students is slowly rising. Data for 2006 through 2011 (with the exception of 2007) compiled by CoolAvenues, an MBA community portal that has been conducting placement surveys since 2000, shows that between 2006 and 2011 the number of students from the Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow, participating in placements went up from 240 to 365, while the number of recruiting companies increased from 102 to 206.
