CoolAvenue's Interview with:
Vivek Khanchandani
Post Graduate Diploma in Industrial Safety and Environment Management
Batch 2009-11,
National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE), Mumbai.

  1. General Questions
  2. Questions related to Pre-MBA Preparation
  3. Questions related to Group Discussion / Group Exercise
  4. Interview-related Questions
  5. After Joining MBA

Q. What was your first step to start preparation for getting into the B-school of your choice?
A. Enrolling for TIME Aimcat and IMS simcat series.

Q. When did you start your preparation?
A. I started my prep towards the end of June, i.e. around 4.5 months before CAT.

Q. How many months and how many hours daily did you devote for preparation to entrance procedures?
A. I was working, so found it quite difficult to devote much time for preparation. However, I was pretty confident about verbal ability, and interacting with people in English in office, both verbally as well as written communication, it didn't need much attention. For maths, I used to dedicate 1 hour daily at night, and for DI 2-3 hours on Saturday. Besides this, after AIMCAT on Sunday, I used to sit back and analyze the entire paper on Sunday or Monday. This continued for around 3 months after which I entered the mock solving phase, where in I tried to attempt 2-3 mocks a week.

Q. Did you take up some coaching institute or you believed in self-study?
A. TIME study material and Time Aimcats, IMS Simcats. No coaching. City: Trivandrum

Q. What was your experience with coaching?
A. Coaching: NA
Material: Basics covered, for CAT-level questions, need to refer other books.

Q. What are the others books and tests that you used for your MBA preparation, besides the study material provided by you coaching institute?
A. MBA preparation threads on Pagalguy, books by Arun Sharma, and wide variety of novels for just reading when I didn't feel like studying.

Q. Can you tell us which are your favorite books, books that you used for preparing for entrance, books for self-development and books for pure relaxation?
A. Occasionally referred Arun Sharma for Quant. Besides this novels by David Baldacci, Frederick Forsyth.

Q. What was your strongest and weakest area while preparing for MBA?
A. Strongest would be VA (as in 35-40 minutes means I would comfortably clear VA cutoff), and 45 minutes would mean a 98 %ile sectional. Other sections I went for accuracy, so pretty decent here too, unless I lost track of time.

Q. Some tips which you used for mastering Quantitative Aptitude, Reading Comprehension, etc.
A. Quant is about practice, familiarizing yourself with the kind of problems that are expected. For RC, reading whenever you can, read anything, newspapers, novels. Philosophy is more helpful, but personally too boring.

Q. How much time did you put for MBA preparation everyday? In case you were working, how did you manage this preparation while working full time?
A.Working, so around 1-2 hours daily, with more effort on weekends. At night after coming from office and having my food, I used to sit for preparation at around 11, and last till I finish my target for the day, or I was in no position to continue.

Q. Which all Exams and B-schools you applied to?
A. Exams: CAT, XAT, FMS
B-schools: IIMs, NITIE, MDI, XLRI and FMS

Q. Your present B-school and programme. What made you opt or this particular institute and programme?
A. National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE), Post Graduate Diploma in Industrial Safety and Environment Management Wasn't my first choice, but I had applied to this course because it offered an objective approach towards sustainable development, combined with inputs from niche business domains of Operations, Finance, Marketing.

Q. What procedures your school has for admission to its MBA program?
A. Candidates are shortlisted on the basis of their CAT scores. This is followed by a group discussion and a personal interview. Based on a final score calculated on the basis of appropriate weightage to each stage, candidates are given final converts.

Q. What is the range of score for students who are admitted in your B-school?
A. 98.5 + %ile

Q. What was your score?
A. 99.92 %ile
