Background

Q. Can you tell us something about yourself and your pre-MBA qualifications and work-experience?
A. I come from engineering background and graduated from RVCE Bangalore in 2006. I joined Fidelity Business Services India Pvt Limited as Graduate Trainee Engineer in 2006 and worked in areas of Software Development and Maintenance. I joined Quadwave Consulting pvt Limited; a start up formed in July 2007 and worked as Senior Software engineer in Open Source Technologies and Microsoft projects. I have had a total work experience of 3 years in IT sector before I joined PGDM course at SPJIMR in 2009 and have taken up Information Management as my specialization.

Q. So when did you decide to go for MBA?
A. I decided to go for MBA after the second year of my graduation. Post graduation had been on my list long back but the Degree was decided only after two years into my engineering, when I realized I did not want to go for higher studies in the same stream. Moreover, after putting a lot of thought into it, I could relate management to my personality more than anything else.

Q. Will an MBA degree add on to your existing career plan or did you decide to switch/start a career in management?
A. I was sure right from the start that, Management was my true calling. Hence, I completed my Bachelors of Business Administration (BBA) and to augment my understanding of the theoretical managerial concepts that I learnt during my Graduation, I realized that an MBA would be the need of the hour so that I know how, when, why and what concepts to apply in practical scenarios when I join an organisation tomorrow. This would ensure that i can climb the corporate Ladder more systematically and rapidly. So, an MBA degree would definitely add to my existing career plan.

Q. What exactly were your reasons for pursuing management as your career?
A. The ability to make the right choices, to be able to work with diverse people etc., were some qualities I needed to inculcate for whatever career option i chose for myself. Be it running a Small shop or running a big corporation or anything for that matter and so MBA is a degree through which i could pick the fundamentals of management in the most time efficient manner and in settings that can come as close to the real world.

Q. Do you think specializations like Operations / HR are confined to a particular gender? If yes, why?
A. In general people tend to stereo specializations such as operations or HR to be confined to a particular gender as they believe that some roles are better associated with women than men. But I don't believe this is true as it isn't fair to generalize on peoples abilities and confine them to certain specializations based on gender.

Q. Do you think money plays a great role in choosing management as a career?
A. For a lot of people it is about the money as it is one of the fastest and easiest ways to grow in your career path but it is not just about the money as it has more to do with the kind of job opportunities that you are exposed to and the prospect of working towards your goals and in your line of interest.

Q. Which MBA institutes and programs you identified for your MBA?
A. Following are the list of MBA institutes that I had applied for -

  • IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, Lucknow, Kozhikode, Indore, Shillong
  • XLRI Jamshedpur ( PGDM, PMIR)
  • SPJIMR Mumbai (Finance)
  • SIBM, Pune
  • Q. Your present B-school and programme. Also specify your Batch.
    A. Two year Post graduate Diploma in Management ( PGDM) at SP Jain Institute of management and research, Mumbai. The current batch has strength of around 178 Participants from Four different specializations of Financial management, Marketing Management, Operations Management and Information management (IM).
