What could be better than the summer placements at IIM-A, with about 50% of the 173-strong batch placed abroad? (Incidentally, better than the final placement figure of any other campus in the country...)

The answer should be obvious - the final placements, of course! Chasing IIMA grads with a vengeance from 1-4 March are traditional recruiters - McKinsey, BCG, Citibank, ICICI, HLL, P&G, HCL and Wipro. In addition, a plethora of international giants will also be recruiting from the campus. Amongst those recruiting exclusively from IIM-A are leading Wall Street firms, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley, Dean Witter, World Bank associate International Finance Corporation and Consulting companies, The McKenna Group and Marakon Associates.

Other international biggies continuing their relationships with the institute are i2 Technologies, J.P. Morgan-Chase, Lehman Brothers, Deutsche Bank and Deloitte Consulting. In addition to recruiting for its Mumbai office, BCG is also looking for candidates for its New York, Atlanta, Dallas, Munich, and Amsterdam offices.

The recruitment this year promises to continue the upward trend in terms of salaries offered and job content. Says Kapil Dahiya, the incoming student coordinator, IIM-A, "The mix of finance, consulting, marketing and IT companies on campus offers our students the opportunity to work in the most challenging and stimulating work environments. With this blend of national and international companies, IIM-A has truly moved into the ranks of the best B-schools worldwide." The optimism on the campus is infectious. Groups of second year students can be seen fervently revising their knowledge gleaned over two years of rigorous academics. Even the recent global economic slowdown seems to have put no dampener on the enthusiasm or the expectations of these students.

Last year, IIMA witnessed the best placements ever seen on any Indian campus. 41 % of the batch was placed abroad with 27 people in New York alone. The Placement week that usually extends for a period of 4 days wound up in 2 with 450 odd offers made to a pool of 180 students. However, this year, offers from Indian firms are extremely competitive, and a large number of students have expressed their preference for these companies. This year promises to improve on last years exceptional figures.

Last year's statistics were as follows:

Average Indian salary: Rs 6.5 lakhs p.a.
Average foreign salary: US$ 88,000/-
Overall average salary: Rs. 18 lakhs
Highest Indian salary: Rs. 11 lakhs (for zero-work-ex candidates)
Highest foreign salary: $ 142,000 + bonus

These figures do not take into account the valuation of stock options, bonuses and other perks, but do have $ salaries included.

Placement 2000 - Epilogue

Institute with most grandiose placements among all Indian B-schools, ...leading B-school in Asia-Pacific….

Crowning glory was the coming of Goldman Sachs, the golden Wall Street Bank, touching base first time at any Indian B-school.

Other star recruiters were Lehman, MSDW, S&P, CSFB, Deutsche Bank and other regular Banks, and FIs. Mckenna Consulting created history by video conferencing the selection process. IndOcean Chase offered mind-boggling salary + bonus of Rs 25 Lakhs.

"Job Shops"- the AC tents at D-16 lawns were scene of placement activity.

The Show was aglow!…

Will Placement 2001 be affected by recent Business Today rankings, where IIMB dethroned IIMA as #1 B-school in India?
