Group Discussion (GD) Topics for MBA Entrance
Apr 21,2013
Group Discussions are a major and essential component of admission process of any Indian B-schools including IIMs. Once students are short-listed on the basis of their CAT / XAT / SNAP / any other MBA Entrance Test Score, or short-listed on the basis of their application and academic records, the next stage they have to participate in turns out to be a Group Discussion.
A Group Discussion is a methodology used by any institution / organization to gauge whether the candidate has certain personality traits and/or skills that are desired by the concerned institute / organization. In this methodology, all short-listed candidates are divided into groups of 8-12 students. Each group is given a topic or a situation. The group is allowed a few minutes to think about the same, and then asked to discuss it among themselves for 15-20 minutes, while a panel of judges observes and analyzes the proceedings.
The topic can be anything ranging from current events to some political issues, from social issues to some Bollywood flick. And based on the performance of candidates in these Group Discussions, they are short-listed to the next or final stage of admission - Personal Interview.
Hence, good performance in Group Discussions is a pre-requisite for admission to any good B-school. Though it's not feasible to prepare in advance for all possible GD topics, what an aspirant can do is take some topics discussed in recent times in previously held GDs, and prepare some key points for each.
Points to remember for participating in this discussion:
• Assume, you are one of the members of a real group discussion.
• Grab the opportunity to communicate your thoughts on topic mentioned above.
• Demonstrate your managerial skills, provide a solution
• Kindly refrain from posting derogatory comments
Given below are some such general topics that have been discussed at B-schools in recent times.

cn u giv some tips for gd
What are good topics for essay for admission to MBA Programs?
Dear Frens,
GD topics for MBA can be catogorized in 3 categories - 1. Business (Finance, economy, inflation, derulation, export import), 2. Social (Euthansia, Dowry, foeticide) 3. Abstract (sky is blue, roses are red)
You need to be updated with impotant events for the current year. For instance, important event for 2010 can be: Derulation of oil prices, Oil well leakage of BP in Gulf of Mexico, etc.
Everyone prepares for the GD topics for MBA as you said: Business, Social and Abstract. Almost everyone tries to get themselves updated on the contemporary topics. But what is the difference?
As an interviewer what I would like to say is that now-a-days with information overflow and cluttering what we look for is your ability to analyze, ability to interpret – which none of the straight forward publications do. You should have sense of humor; you should be witty without being frivolous. Most importantly, you should be an excellent communicator.
It is imperative to read standard magazines like Time, Economist regularly. It is important to read the analysis parts / editorial of Economic Times or Business Standard. Practice regularly with Rosetta-Stone or preferably Espoir Smart Communication through Management Ideas, as Espoir is the only communication program with in-built body language recording software. Above all improve your confidence by attending mock Group Discussions among your friends.

how to start gd sub? which kind of subject are mostly asked in gd up to now?
Hi Avinash
I am copy pasting an excerpt from an article on GD from CoolAvenues. Here are the excerpts...
"Initiating a GD is a high profit high loss strategy. Whenever a candidate initiates a GD, he apart from grabbing an opportunity to speak also grabs the attention of the examiners and his fellow candidates. So if a candidate, who initiates the GD, is able to make a favorable first impression through his content and communication skills, it will help him sail through the GD."

Dear Priya
Try to read English News Papers like The Hindu, Times of India. Watch English news and movies to learn how to speak good.
Also try to learn at least 10 new words daily. While reading news paper keep dictionary and paper pencil with you, so that you can write down words that you have seen first time.
