Dare to Think Beyond IIMs

Did the title sound familiar to you? Well, what is going to follow is not something we generally associate with the title!

When asked ‘Should we drop a year or two for getting into IIMs’, we find ourselves in dilemma. It is wise to take off for some time for self-introspection or to identify where does true passion lies, but absolutely not for a myopic goal of getting into just 3-4 colleges.

Neither getting into IIM-A is the end of effort requirement for future success nor not getting into top IIMs is the end of life.

Does a person scoring 99.9x percentile not being able to get through IIMs in a particular season don’t even deserve to have 1 year of his career saved by getting into other top B-Schools of the country like FMS, XLRI NITIE, S.P.Jain and MDI etc. to pursue his dreams and cherish the other platforms available to build the career. No doubt that getting into IIM-A,B,C,L is the dream of everyone but practical thinking needs to be adopted rather than thinking just by heart before taking the decision of dropping a year or not.

If you have the right attitude and approach for your long term goal and the ability to prioritize things, you shall be able to achieve the ultimate goal irrespective of the slight deviation in platform provided by top non-IIM B-Schools as compared to top 4 IIMs.

Having said this, one should remember that every success or failure boils down to your level of motivation and inspiration behind sustaining it. In short, person with self-belief, confidence and positive attitude can achieve great heights in career irrespective of the fact that he is from IIM or not. So, dare to think beyond IIMs when it comes to the decision of dropping a year. Don’t follow the crowd rather let your capabilities drive your success. It is not the tag which is going to fetch you success but it is YOU who is going to fetch it for you.
