Excellence in Manufacturing

Objectives: The specific objectives of PEM are: -

  • to create greater awareness and exposure on how to harness the manufacturing function as a source of competitive advantage.

  • to identify and deal with macro economic policy issues, and corporate strategic inputs which have a significant impact on the manufacturing function.

  • to develop an appreciation of a long-term perspective for creating excellence in manufacturing.

  • to develop sensitivity and understanding of related functional areas which have critical bearing on manufacturing decisions and operational issues.

  • to develop indepth understanding of related functional areas such as product design and development, operations, technology, supply chain, sourcing, and quality.

  • to create and develop problem solving capabilities and analytical abilities to make sound manufacturing and related decisions.

    For: PEM is designed for executives with about a decade of experience from organizations which are using manufacturing as a source of competitive advantage. Candidates for PEM would hold immense potential to occupy key functional positions and responsibility in the next five years in their own organizations. Willingness to learn and assimilate new ideas and concepts would be a prerequisite. Experience in dealing with cross-functional areas would be an added advantage. A strong analytical ability and experience in rigorous problem solving methodology would enhance the learning value from PEM. The participants would preferably be in their mid-thirties, have a good working knowledge of written and spoken English, and familiarity with basic mathematics.

    Content: The content of PEM is designed to focus on contemporary issues and concepts in manufacturing, operations, and technology. The programme is designed to interlink systematically the choice on these core areas to other related functional areas like accounting and finance, marketing, information systems, industrial relations, corporate strategy and macro and micro economics. The programme would aim to bring out a change in the mindset in problem identification, generation of alternatives, and arriving at a rational choice keeping the functional importance and organizational perspective. Broad outlines of the topics covered in the programme are described below: -

    Module 1
    Economic Environment, Corporate Strategy, and Manufacturing Policy
    Focus. To establish the role of the macro-economic environment in industrial policy, dimensions of competition and industry structure, role of manufacturing in corporate strategy, and develop a manufacturing strategy.
    Contents. Liberalization and Macro-Economic Environment; Industrial Policy, Formulation of Corporate Strategy, Manufacturing Strategy Formulation and Implementation.

    Module 2
    Product: Concept, Design, and Development
    Focus. To understand the attributes (market, functional, and design) of a product, conceptualize and evaluate a product design, and plan for rapid prototyping and development.
    Functional Contents. Organizing for the Design Function, Robust Design, Design Process.
    Complementary Contents. Market Analysis and Segmentation; Product Mix Choice, Cross Functional Teams.

    Module 3
    Operations: People, Technology and Practices
    Focus. To understand the linkage between various elements that contribute towards manufacturing excellence and design action plans to enhance the capabilities in manufacturing. To develop analytical skills for making effective manufacturing related decisions.
    Functional Contents. Issues in Managing Different Production Processes, Capacity Planning, Cellular Manufacturing, TQM, Process Capability, Process Control, Production Planning, MRP, JIT, Shop Floor Synchronization and Lead Time Reduction, WIP Management, Implementation of Manufacturing Management Programmes, Information Systems and CIM.
    Complementary Contents. Financial and Strategic Justification of Technology, Product Costing, Worker Training, Welfare and Motivation, Compensation and Incentives, Quality Circles, Small Group Initiatives, Team Work, Creating a Learning Organization.

    Module 4
    Supply Chain: Design and Coordination
    Focus. To design an effective supply chain and manage it efficiently to deliver desired products to the customer.
    Functional Contents. Supply Chain Design, Managing Supply Chain - Coordination of Decisions between Entities in the Supply Chain, Performance Measurement in Supply Chains, Inventory Management and Physical Distribution, Strategic Sourcing and Vendor Management.
    Complementary Contents. Channel Design and Management, Credit Management, Working Capital Management.

    Module 5
    Innovation and Technological Change
    Focus. To understand the process of managing technological change and the role of innovation in this process.
    Contents. Technology Strategy, Innovation and R&D, Technological alliances.
