Data Warehousing & Business Intelligence
in Banking & Financial Services Industry

Program Director: Prof. P. C. Narayan
February 05-07, 2007
IIMB Campus

Programme Overview: The Banking and Financial Services Industry (BFSI) is in a state of rapid transition. Fierce competition, sharp decline in margins and profitability, tighter regulatory and disclosures norms and the need for robust risk management and early warning systems have compelled Banks to look at ‘Data Warehousing’ (DW) and ‘Business Intelligence’ (BI) solutions to manage their business more efficiently and effectively.
Banks worldwide use DW solutions normally for profitability analysis and to enhance their risk management capability. Customer Relationship Management (CRM) solutions are also being increasingly deployed by banks to enhance their ability to manage and grow their customer base in the most desired manner. In the Indian context, most Banks have already implemented or are in the process of implementing a bank-wide ‘Core Banking System’ to facilitate processing of transactions seamlessly across the enterprise. Many Banks have also aggressively implemented a multi-channel delivery capability including Internet Banking, ATMs etc. Deploying a DW and BI capability will be the logical and immediate next step for Banks in their strategic use of Information Technology.

Objectives: This program aims to equip participants with a good insight into the business benefits and the theoretical framework of DW and BI systems and the steps involved in deploying a DW and BI solution in the BFSI context.

Contents: Both the business and technology aspects of DW and BI solutions in the BFSI domain will be addressed in the programme, with specific reference to the issues and challenges in the Indian context.

Topics will include: -

  • The technology context in banking and financial services

  • Data Warehouse architecture and components

  • Steps in designing a Data Warehouse and getting heterogeneous data into the Data Warehouse

  • Business Intelligence architecture for BFSI

  • Application of DW and BI in BFSI, including profitability analysis, risk management, predictive modeling, etc.

  • Data Warehouse in the context of CRM in BFSI

  • Creating business value with a DW and BI solution

Who can Attend: Senior functionaries from banks and financial services companies who are either responsible for IT strategy or those who will play a leadership role in the DW and BI initiative in the Bank. Since the program will be interspersed with case studies and group work, it is strongly recommended that organizations that wish to nominate participants for this programme send a cross-functional team that has extensive and complimentary skill set covering financial planning, risk management, asset liability management, information technology and banking operations. The team would then be able to carry the learning back to their workplace and participate actively in the strategy formulation and implementation process of the DW and BI solution.

Information technology companies who are active or propose to enter the DW and BI space in the BFSI segment may nominate participants who will be leading large projects in this domain, either in a development or project management role. Such nominees should have a reasonably good grasp of the products and processes in the BFSI domain, as this will be a pre-requisite for participation in the programme.
