IIM Kozhikode

Soft Computing for Managerial Decision Making
Program Director: Prof. Anjan Kumar Swain
February 26-28, 2007
At IIM Kozhikode
Fee: Residential - Rs. 15,000/- & Non-Residential - Rs. 12,000/-

Introduction: Primarily, the science of decision making concerns with how decisions are actually made and how they can be made better or move efficiently and sucessfully. Managers use different methodologies and procedures to tackle complex problems incorporating operational data, and plan various business activities possibly using historical data.
In the present context, a manager has to take rapid decisions amid burgeoning growth of information along with many uncertainties. Under these conditions, it is very unlikely to make an optimal decision. Then, it is the very right time to find to assess what is an optimal decision in a highly uncertain environment. To take a better decision in these situations and many other complex activities it is worth exploring the state-of-the-art methodologies known as "soft computing". Many of the soft computing methods utilize analogies with various phenomena in nature and/or society. Broadly, soft computing methods include fuzzy logic, neural networks, evolutionary computation methods, and probabilistic learning. These methods independently or collectively have been used for solving various complex problems in all facets of life.

Objectives: The major goal of this course is to equip the managers sufficiently to understand the underlying concepts of soft computing methods from a business perspective (without the usual mathematical rigor) so as to enhance their businesses. Further, this three day course enables the managers to explore the use of these methods to address decision making process to deal with the customers, suppliers and internal business processes such as inventory control, investments, personnel actions, new product development, resource allocation and many others. At the end of this course the attendees will certainly be in a position to answer all the following questions.

  • What are soft computing methodologies?

  • How to use soft computing methods to take optimal decisions in complex situations?

  • How managers should make decisions instead of how they do make decisions?

  • How rational decision makers should act?

  • What methods to use in different situations?

  • What are the pros and cons of these methods?

  • For: This course is appropriate for all managers starting (new and experienced) from consultants, sales people, bankers, marketers, sub-floor technocrats and managers etc.

  • Who deals with uncertain situations?

  • To influencing other people's decision

  • Who wants to develop and further sharpen their problem-solving and decision making skills.

  • Contents:

  • Concepts of soft computing and its taxonomy

  • Soft vs. hard computing
