The Indian Institutes of Management (Ahmedabad and Calcutta) took the top spots in Business World Indias Best B-School Survey 2012. The magazine ranked 55 b-schools in India on the basis of Infrastructure and living experience, intellectual capital, placements, industry interface and pedagogy.

The top gainers this year include S P Jain Institute of Management & Research (SPJIMR), Mumbai, which has jumped from 12th position in 2011 to 4th this year. Faculty of Management Studies (FMS), Delhi which was on 16th position last year jumped to number 5 this year. IMT, Ghaziabad gained 4 places from 13th last year to 9th this year.

B-schools to loose this year include NMIMS, Mumbai which slashed from 4th position last year to 7th this year. Other b-schools that came down the ranking ladder are IIM Indore, SJMSoM IIT Mumbai, KJ Somaiya Mumbai and DMS IIT Delhi.

B-Schools that have sprung in as a surprise to be included in top 20 are New Delhi Institute of Management, New Delhi and Indian Institute of Forest Management, Bhopal.

Another shocking surprise that came as a part of the ranking is JBIMS, Mumbai, Great Lakes Institute of Management, Chennai and IIM Shillong placed at number 21, 22 and 23 respectively.

IIM Lucknow and other new IIMs are completely missing from the survey. However, IIM Bangalore could not be included as data for some of the parameters was not available.

BS Best B-School Survey 2012: IMT Nagpur, KJ Somaiya in Super League; FMS, IIFT Delhi missing

Business Standard has revealed BS Best B-School Survey 2012, in association with IMRB International, a leading market research agency in India.

Unlike the traditional, the survey has not ranked b-schools in a number order but has put them in 14 hierarchical categories: Super League 1, Super League 2, A1 through A8, and B1 through B4.

B-Schools which are placed in Super League 1 are Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Kolkata, Indore, Management Development Institute, Gurgaon, National Institute of Industrial Engineering, Mumbai, Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar and XLRI, Jamshedpur.

B-Schools appearing in Super League 2 are Great Lakes Institute of Management, Chennai, Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode, Institute of Management, Nirma University, Ahmedabad, Institute of Management Technology, Ghaziabad, Institute of Management Technology, Nagpur, International Management Institute, New Delhi, Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai, KJ Somaiya Institute of Management Studies & Research, Mumbai, SP Jain Institute of Management & Research, Mumbai and SVKMs Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai.

Though BS played it safe not ranking b-schools, but putting them in hierarchical brackets, it still has come to everybodys astonishment, as leading b-schools like FMS Delhi, IIFT New Delhi completely missing from top 2 leagues and b-schools like IMT Nagpur and KJ Somaiya being included.

According to BS, the audit module accounted a range of elements such as intellectual capital, infrastructure, admissions and placements, industry interface, governance and the scale of operations, each of which can be measured objectively. The perception scores take into account the viewpoint of the industry and the alumni.

FT Global MBA Rankings 2012: IIM A holds to number 11, ISB slashes 7 places

Financial Times (FT) recently released Global MBA Rankings 2012. Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, which was first time ranked in FT Global MBA Ranking 2011, did not changed it position and remained at number 11 this year too.

Another eminent college from Asia-Pacific region, Indian School of Business (ISB) Hyderabad, has descended on the FT Ranking ladder to come down to number 20 from number 13 last year.

As per the survey data, weighted salary of IIM Ahmedabad has increased by US$ 636 this year, while that of ISB Hyderabad has decreased by US$ 4,894. Placement success rank given to ISB is 41 while IIM A has got 17. Placement Success Rank is the rank given by alumni who used the careers services at their business school. They were asked to rank its effectiveness in their job search. This figure includes data for the current year and the one or two preceding years where available.

Stanford Graduate School of Business, California ruled the chart shifting from number 4 position last year to number 1 this time. Harvard Business School, University of Pennsylvania-Wharton, and London Business School occupied number 2, 3 and 4 respectively.

Methodology
FT used two online surveys to collect the required survey data. The first survey was completed by schools, while second was completed by b-school alumni who graduated in 2008. A 20 percent response rate was required from alumni for b-schools to be eligible for the ranking. This year, a total of 9,466 responses were submitted by alumni, 44 per cent of graduates contacted.

As the fate of 1.85 lac students in India unveiled January11, 2012, CNBC-TV18 released the latest edition of its annual B-School rankings study, ‘India’s Best B-Schools 2012’. The 4th edition of the ranking covers 145 B-Schools, 235 recruiters and 217 faculty members, across a dual methodology.

Rise of IIM-Bangalore

IIM Ahmedabad, the mecca of management education in India continues to be the benchmark. However, IIM Bangalore is running very close driven by its improved performance in areas such as industry interface & international linkages. IIM’s continued their pre-eminence amongst management schools, with as many as six out of the top 10 B-schools being an IIM.

Placements
BFSI, IT, Consulting & FMCG continue to be favorite haunts for India’s top b-school graduates as they accounted for almost 70% of B-School recruiters. In terms of average salaries, India’s top b-schools saw an average increase of approximately 20%. However, amongst the lower ranked schools, there were considerable challenges in terms of intake as well as salary increases and placements.

At IIM-A, the maximum salary offered for an Indian job was Rs 37 lacs per annum and for a foreign posting was US $ 139.64 thousand per annum. The average and median salary figures were 16.36 lacs per annum and 15.15 lacs per annum respectively. About 14 percent of the graduates were posted abroad. As is known, IIM-A has recently introduced the ‘cohort’ based placement system, wherein companies that offer similar roles, profiles, salaries, locations etc would visit campus together at a particular time basis batch preferences.

Greater impetus for research and entrepreneurship

IIM-A led the pack in terms of research, with a large number of publications by its faculty members in leading A grade journals. On the whole, there has been an improvement in research published by leading b-schools in the country, as compared to last year.

In almost all top B-Schools there are now various programmes to promote entrepreneurship. In about 15 top Schools, business incubators are active. Ever since its inception, the incubation centre at IIM A has worked with over 55 aspiring enterprises out of which close to 45 are still operating and leveraging their expertise, whereas the incubation centre at IIM-B has launched 45 projects so far.

Methodology
Research organization C fore conducted the survey to rank top B-schools in India. The survey is based on the objective data collected from 145 B-schools and also perceptual survey conducted among 235 recruiters and 217 faculty members. The validation exercise was carried by a special team which cross-checked the data by asking for necessary documents like appointment letters, balance sheets, annual report etc. Veracity of information was also checked by mystery auditing method.

IIM A, B, C & ISB make it to top 10 in Asia Pacific in QS Global 200 B-Schools list

Indian business schools have strengthened their standing among international employers as four Indian institutions have made it to the list of top-10 B-schools in the Asia Pacific region, says a survey.

According to the QS Global 200 Business Schools Report, Indian business schools have improved in international employer opinion considerably this year, moving up in both the Asia-Pacific rating, and almost all of the specialisation.

Among the top 36 business schools in the Asia Pacific region, Australia boasts of 11 premier schools, but India is among the biggest improvers as the country has six schools on the list, including four in the top-10.

The four Indian B-schools that have made it to the top 10 among Asia Pacific region are the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM-A) (2nd) , Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIM-B) (5th), Indian School of Business (ISB) (7th) and the Indian Institute of Management Kolkata (IIM-K) (8th).

Other two business schools that got featured in the list include S P Jain Institute of Management and Research at 16th rank and Indian Institute of Foreign Trade which made the cut this year for the first time at 21st place.

The report noted that business schools in India continue to climb up the ratings.

'In an economy that is rapidly growing in global importance, the rise in employer opinion of MBA graduates is extremely promising in ensuring the development of future business leaders to sustain the fast-paced economic growth,' the report said.

Overall, INSEAD - Singapore is the preferred choice among employers, retaining its position in the top spot of the Asia-Pacific rating for three years running.

The schools that have shown the biggest improvements in employer opinion this year are two Indian schools, both jumped four places up the ratings: Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad and the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta.

Year-on-year, business schools in the Asia-Pacific region have strengthened their role in the global MBA education scene as well.

The number of Asian and Australian schools featured in the QS Global 200 Business Schools Report has increased from 10 in 2004 to 36 this year.

'Economic growth in some Asian countries, particularly in China and India has heightened the demand for more accredited business schools in the region in order to train the next generation of successful business leaders,' the report said.

The major players in the region's education sector are Australia, Singapore and India, the report said adding that the rapid rise in the number of schools highlights the fact that across Asia, and especially so in India and China, employers are embracing MBAs.

Other premier B-Schools in the Asia Pacific region include Melbourne Business School, The University of Melbourne at the 3rd place, followed by NUS Business School, National University of Singapore (4th), University of South Wales (6th), China Europe International Business School (9th), the HKUST Business School at (10th).

QS Global 200 Business Schools Report: IIM A ranked 2

B-Schools in the Asia-Pacific region are strengthening their hold in global MBA education scene with every passing year. B-School ranking are the most feasible way to simplify aspirant’s search for the best b-schools.

A discernible push in the quality of Asian and Australian b-schools is seen in last 7 years. The QS Global 200 Business Schools Report which only had 10 b-schools from Asia and Australia in 2004 has 36 b-schools from the region, this year.

This year, IIM Ahmedabad has secured second position in Asia – Pacific region in QS Global 200 Business Schools Report, INSEAD Singapore being at number one. Business Today B-School Ranking 2011: IIM A looses number one position to IIM B

CAT 2011 is officially out of bag and aspirants are busy—employing day and night in preparing hard to crack this tough MBA nut. It is time around when aspirants choose which b-schools to apply for to pursue MBA. B-School rankings have always been a good way of shortlisting b-schools to apply for.

Business Today have come up with its latest issue of b-school ranking—BT B-school Rankings 2011. Coinciding with the basic nature of b-school rankings, this ranking too is packed with ‘finger biting’ surprises—number one being IIM Ahmedabad placed at 3 on the ranking ladder after IIM Bangalore and IIM Calcutta.

IIM Ahmedabad has consistently remained on number one position in BT b-school ranking and other rankings too. It is for the first time in near history when IIM A is demoted from its long held position. Another surprising and unusual trend noticed this year is 6 IIMs (IIM B, C, A, I, L and K – in that order) topping the chart leaving behind private institutions like IIFT Delhi (7), ISB Hyderabad (8), XLRI Jamshedpur (10) and FMS Delhi (11).

B-Schools who scored well
New entries like IIM Kozhikode (6), IIM Shillong (9), SCMHRD Pune (12), DMS IIT Delhi (14) and S P Jain Mumbai (15) ranked well. IIM Ahmedabad, though left poorer in overall ratings, still tops the chart in terms of reputation. TISS Mumbai which was at 32nd position last year made it to number 18 this time.

B-Schools that left poorer
If there were b-schools who jumped the ranking ladder with a big leap, there were some who lost hugely. DMS IIT Roorkee which was at number 17 last year is placed at 29th position this time. K J Somaiya which followed DMS IIT Roorkee last year is a close associate this time too, as it fell down the ladder to 30th position.

Survey Methodology
The survey was conducted by BT partner Nielsen. The BT B-School Ranking 2011 was a perception based survey. Scores were assigned to the responses of the five groups of stakeholders – MBA aspirants, current MBA students, young executives in companies, recruiters and permanent faculty. These scores were aggregated, the highest scorer was assigned a score of 100, and the remaining scores were indexed to it, as explained by BT.

Economic Times B-School Ranking 2011 | IIM Calcutta ranked below SIBM

The latest Economic Times India Inc's Preferred B-Schools ranking has sparked a lot of confrontation within the MBA fraternity. According to the latest ranking published by ET April 14, Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad is the top choice of recruiters followed by XLRI Jamshedpur.

You must be wondering what the confrontation all about is! Well, very surprisingly SIBM Pune is placed at number four leaving IIM Calcutta one notch behind at number five. Now this is really unprecedented and may be unacceptable for a lot many people. IIM Calcutta, the 50 year old b-school, the oldest among IIMs and the second oldest in the country after XLRI, is left behind by about 17 year younger institute.

Not only this, there are many more surprises with 6 privately owned institutes in the top ten list, IIM Lucknow placed at number 8 after NMIMS Mumbai and IMT Ghaziabad, Amity is placed before FMS and IIM Indore and NITIE Mumbai, which saw participation of 82 recruiters in placements 2011 is placed at number 24.

Apart from the flawed rankings there were even some factual errors. In one of the ranking articles—‘ET Business school ranking: IIM-Ahmedabad leads listing as top choice of recruiters.’ According to the story, IIM Ahmedabad is a 47 year old institute, however, IIM-A is celebrating its golden jubilee this year. At another place, it is said that “IIM-Calcutta, the 44-year-old institute set up in league with the Sloan School of Management...,” which is again incorrect. IIM Calcutta is the oldest among IIMs and is also celebrating its golden jubilee this year.

Methodology:
The Economic Times commissioned IMRB to do the ranking b-schools based surveying recruiters from India's leading companies on the basis of turnover. The top ET 500 companies were surveyed by IMRB. Respondents from each of the business functions: Marketing, Finance, production, IT and, HR were selected and surveyed. The respondents were actively involved in recruiting management graduates from b-schools in the last two years, for their own functional area.

The survey covered companies headquartered in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Kolkata, Pune and Hyderabad. According to a user comment on an undisclosed portal, the methodology ET has adopted is flawed, he says, “Companies based in Mumbai hire extensively from the likes of Welingkar and NMIMS. Similarly, Delhi companies from the likes of Amity. Therefore a majority of the managers are from there... Do they vote truthfully or just blindly vote for their own college? Does this explain the presence of such colleges in the top?”

Careers360 has come up with its latest b-school ranking. The comprehensive ranking by Careers360 has identified 22 b-schools under public ownership and 91 b-schools under private ownership. It has also prepared an exhaustive list of institutes which are missing from the ranking, under each category.

The six IIMs—Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, Lucknow, Indore and Kozhikode grabbed first six positions in the ranking, under public ownership category. IITs, NITIE, FMS, IIFT and JBIMS are also among the league of top 22 b-schools under this category.

Methodology
Careers360 adopted ownership based ranking system. The ranking is segregated on the basis of the ownership of the b-school. A total 113 b-schools participated in the ranking; data was collected from these b-schools and was arrived at total marks. The scoring was done on the basis of same algorithm in order to ease comparison of b-schools.

It ranked top 12 institutions based on their annual reports, mandatory disclosures, and in some cases, publically available data. It also weeded out or normalised unsubstantiated claims made by some institutes by verifying them with the data submitted to relevant authorities like AICTE, UGC and the Ministry of HRD. Data found incommensurate with the supporting documents was suitably corrected.

The seven deciding factors in the ranking were student quality, faculty quality, facilities + academic assistance, pedagogy and recognition, research output, executive training and placements, ROI & brand equity.

FT ranks ISB 13 in the Global Top MBA rankings 2011

The Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP) of the Indian School of Business (ISB) has been ranked No: 13 in the Global Top MBA rankings 2011 released by the Financial Times, London. It also recorded the highest "Salary percentage increase" among all the top 100 schools. Eduniversal has come out with its latest University and B-school ranking in India. The Eduniversal B-school ranking provides a universal perspective on higher education. Indian Institute of Management Bangalore is ranked number one b-school in India, followed by Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad. These premier management institutes of India have been awarded with ‘5 Palms’—the highest recognition, accorded to "Universal Business Schools with major international influence." IIM Bangalore and IIM Ahmedabad also made it to the list of the best 100 B-schools around the world with IIM Bangalore securing 24th position and IIM Ahmedabad on 55th position.

Eduniversal awarded ‘4 Palms’—the second highest recognition in this category, to eight b-schools from India. The 4 Palms recognition is awarded to ‘Top Business Schools’ known internationally. IIT Delhi which was at number three last year shifted to number five in the four palms category with IIT Bombay taking its place.

IIM Bangalore ranked among top 25 B-schools league in the world

After being ranked as “The Employers’ choice” in Asia in 2009 by QA Global B-School ranking survey, Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore (IIMB)has been awarded '5 Palmes', the highest recognition, accorded to "Universal Business Schools with major international influence", in the recently conducted Eduniversal Worldwide Business Schools Ranking 2010, carried out by the French consulting firm SMBG.

IIMB has been ranked as the number one Business School in India for third year in a row. It has been awarded 5 Palmes, the highest recognition, given to the top 100 business schools. IIMB has made it to top 25, securing 24th position amongst the 100 best business schools worldwide. However, IIM Ahmedabad has made it to 55th position, which is again a matter of proud to India.

Eduniversal identified best 1000 business schools around the world employing a Scientific Committee that has established a global mapping system meeting the criteria of universality and the international reputation of each academic institution.

The Deans of these 1000 Best Business Schools from 153 countries have voted for IIMB with a recommendation rate of 453 per thousand (395 in year 2009), followed in the India country ranking by IIM Ahmedabad at 377 (345 in year 2009).

From December 2009 to March 2010, Dean and Directors of 1000 best academic institutions were asked to participate in the survey—The Deans’ Vote, to select Business Schools of the Eduniversal Official Selection in 153 countries. They were asked to answer a simple question—“Which business school(s) would you recommend to anyone wishing to study in this country?"

The Eduniversal Palms indicate the level of international reputation an academic institution has.

The results of 'Eduniversal Worldwide Business Schools Ranking 2010' annual survey were announced officially at the third Eduniversal world convention held in Prague.

Business Today magazine has come out with B-School Ranking 2010 in its October issue. The rankings have incorporated a number of surprises this year. Business Today had engaged leading market research firm Nielsen for carrying out B-School ranking in India. Nielsen has unveiled the rankings at the time when aspirants are all set to appear for various management entrance exams. Candidates seeking admission to MBA hunts for the best B-Schools around India and the B-School ranking of BT-Nielsen is their answer.

Looking at the interest of the MBA aspirants, Business Today has surveyed more than 1,000 people in 2010 to rank the best B-Schools in India. They have broadened the sample size of the respondents, adding a new category of respondents from MBA coaching institutes, and have widened the geographical spread by covering 30 cities.
Business Today captured respondents thought about B-Schools based on the information and experience they have.

Faculty of Management Studies, Delhi took an amazing leap and climbed to number four this year (FMS was ranked 11 last year). Indian School of Business (ISB), Hyderabad climbed from number 13 (in 2009) to number 7 this year. Where some of the B-Schools marched upward in 2010 some were pushed down in the list like Symbiosis Institute of Business Management, Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai were pushed down from number 4 and number 5 last year to 13 and 14 respectively in 2010.

Amity Business School made his position to the top ten lists last year for the first time since the BT-Nielson survey started in 1998. This year Amity has come in at number 27 in the ranking.

In 2010 minute, addition was done where respondents were asked to rank the B-Schools from 60 shortlisted colleges. It was strange enough to know that the respondents rank IIM Kozhikode in number 30, which is ranked 12 by BT-Nielson. IIM Shillong was ranked 15 by BT-Nielson but respondents ranked it 36. IIM Ahmedabad may score the highest according to the index score but when a student judges the colleges with his/her competence, ability to relocate, inability to finance the programme so in that case she might prefer a tier II or tier III B-School.

TISS unarguably the best HR institute in country

It is a well know fact that IIM’s are the most prestigious institutes of our country when it comes to management studies. They have been the proven winner for last several decades. Ask any mba aspirant in the country and he will tell you that they are the best even if he doesn’t know anything about MBA.

There are only a few institutes who have seriously challenged IIM’s authority all these years. And if there is any institute worthy of it, It is Tata Institute of Social Sciences. TISS has emerged as the best institute for management studies in HR. Many institutes would argue on this statement but deep down their heart they know that TISS is the Numero Uno when it comes to MBA-HR.

However, Its been ranked as 32nd best B-school of the country (Just below IIPM Delhi) according to Business Today's latest survey which obviously is a shock for those who have been in this business for quite some time now. This has only stressed on the fact that one should not believe in these rankings blindly.
