GE Healthcare hosts workshop at IIM Kozhikode

Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode conducted the GE Healthcare workshop on the 15th of September. The workshop was hosted by Mr Muthuvelan V, a Master Black Belt and Lean - Six Sigma Practitioner.
The workshop titled LEAN SIX SIGMA Workshop was organized by the Industry Interaction Cell in collaboration with OMEGA (Operations Interest Group of IIM Kozhikode).
GE Healthcare is a revered name in the healthcare space and has a range of products and services that include medical imaging and information technologies, medical diagnostics, patient monitoring systems, drug discovery, and bio-pharmaceutical manufacturing technologies.
Mr. Muthuvelan gave a detailed overview on Lean Six Sigma and helped students understand the fundamentals from SIX SIGMA which included DFSS and DMAIC along with few core differences of their implementation in an organisation. In addition to this, he also enumerated the successes and the shortcomings of SIX SIGMA. He cited many practical applications for LEAN methodology helping the students gain an insiders point of view in a change decision.
During the second half of the workshop, included students, in teams of 5-6, gave a presentation on a pre-defined topic by Mr.Muthuvelan. While topics such as Interpretations and applications of Z statistics and Z scores highlighted the main attributes of the normal distribution and its practical applications in an organisational context, other topics like Hypothesis Testing and P-value stressed on the various intricacies of Hypothesis Testing with respect to SIX SIGMA. Regression focussed on the theoretical analysis and surface methodology techniques. Design of Experiments glossed over topics like Factorial Method, Tagushi Method and Response Surface Design Methodology. Finally, there were topics like Quality Function Deployment on Quality Function Deployment and the presentation on Cause and Effect Diagram/Fish-bone Diagram explained Process Map, Value Stream Mapping and Failure Mode Effect and Analysis.
The student presentation round involved active participation from the audience as well as Mr.Muthuvelan himself. He was very influential in establishing a connection between the topics in hand and a real life scenario which had a profound impact on the learning level. The student fraternity perceived it as an enlightening session and hopes to sustain this relationship with GE healthcare
