VGSoM IIT Kharagpur exhilarates in the spirit of Leadership

The August-September time period found itself to be one of the most happening schedules in VGSoM, in terms of the interaction among the students and the corporate. The two months saw one the most sort-after leadership summits held in great grandeur- The HR Summit and the Marketing Summit.

The floor was flaunted with many eminent personalities from the industry and the amount of knowledge shared was immense. It all started as an initiative of the Corporate and Media Interaction Cell of VGSoM, and the huge success of these events is something they would be proud of. Let us peep into what had happened in the two summits.


THE TALK 2012 -The HR Leadership Summit held on 4th of August
This event was the first summit conducted in this academic year at VGSoM, IIT Kharagpur. The eminent personalities who attended the event are -

  • Ms. Mridula Sankhyayan, Vice President - Human Capital Management, Goldman Sachs
  • Mr. Uday Guha, VP, Business HR, Mining Business, Aditya Birla Group
  • Mr. Sujoy Banerjee, President, National HRD Network, Kolkata Chapter & Group HR and OD, McNally Bharat
  • Mr. Ayan Banerji, Partner, Edxcare Learning Services and
  • Dr. M. Venkatesan, Associate Professor IIFT.

 A workshop was conducted by Mr. Ayan Banerji, Partner, Edxcare Learning Services. With some very interactive group activities, following the path of learning by doing, the prerequisites of being a good leader were stressed upon by Mr. Banerji. The Panel Discussion on New Strides in HRM : HRM 2.0 was food for thought. Dr. Venkatesan opened the discussion with a brusque introduction of the topic. The discussion was segregated in terms of four focal points pertinent to HR management, viz. Performance Management, Impact and Suggestive usages of Social Media, striking a delicate balance between Work and Life, Ethics and values. Speakers made students verse with the real world HR challenges. After the panel discussion, a presentation on a Case Study Analysis on Role of HR in Change Management was conducted.


MARQUE 2012 The Marketing Summit held on 8th September 2012
After the blooming success of HR summit last month, for the first time ever, a Marketing Summit, Marque 12 was conducted at IIT Kharagpur. The markets of the yester-years have undergone myriad changes on their road to evolution to 'the markets-of-today'. What is popular one year is out-of-style the next, and what was virtually unknown last year may be all the rage today. The summit was organized to focus on the new strides in the marketing world and about the brand management in today's scenario. The summit was attended by some very elite and distinguished guests

  • Mr. Sunder Singh, Global Head- Pre-Sales & Delivery , Tata Consultancy Services
  • Mr. Anshu Bagai, Director-Marketing, Tupperware India
  • Mr. Prabhash Gokarn, Head Marketing, TATA Steel
  • Prof. M.N.Tripathi, Professor-Marketing, XIMB

Mr. Anshu Bagai spoke on how Tupperware emanated from a ' Plastic dabba Company ' 5 years ago to a brand today which stands for ' Women Empowerment'. Contrast to the direct selling concept of Tupperware , Mr. Prabhash Gokarn talked about how emotional branding throws a challenge to B2B marketing companies like TATA Steel and how they created brand connect with the channel partner and a programme called ' Customer Value Management'. Mr. Sunder Singh took the discussion to a further level and explained how emotional connect pass on to generations with a fine example of Liverpool Football Club. He also spoke about the strategies that TCS used to create emotional connect with its clients. In effect, it was a great experience for the students of VGSOM to know the branding strategies of varied markets ranging from direct selling FMCG to B2B heavy steel manufacturer to an intangible service based company.


The Leadership Month at VGSoM, IIT Kharagpur was concluded with a special guest session by Mr. Nalin Mehta, MD, Mahindra Navistar on 13th September 2012. Mr. Mehta, an alum of IIT Kharagpur and FMS, Delhi conducted a session on state of Indian transport industry, Mahindras strategy and positioning in the transport industry and some of Mahindra Navistars key marketing and engineering initiatives.


On the whole, the month created a platform for immense knowledge transfer. For the students it was an enriching season where they could relate their academics to the real corporate world. With due regards to the guests, faculties and students, the LEADERSHIP MONTH ended on a triumphant note.
