The XAT 2011 concluded on January 2, 2011. The New Year 2011 did not bring in good times for XAT aspirants.

Many aspirants at the centers gave disappointing responses when asked how their test was.

XAT 2011 was a 101 questions paper, with a time limit of 120 minutes and 20 minutes for essay writing. The maximum marks for the test was 253 with sectional split of 67, 117 and 69 marks for Analytical Reasoning and Decision Making, Data Interpretation and Quantitative Ability and Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning sections respectively. There were 5 options for each question.

The differential marking within each section also came in as a surprise for aspirants. Though there was no clear mention of progressive negative marking this year, a 1/4th negative marks(s) will be deducted for every incorrect response. There was no sectional time limit mentioned, as there were three sections in all with different number of questions in each section.

One of the aspirants at a test centre in Greater Noida said, “It was the most absurd, the most weird and the toughest paper I have given.” Another aspirant said, “The key was decision making—it was all a matter of balancing the 1 and 2 mark questions with the 3, 4, 5 ones, what I realize now. The first look at the question paper just made me numb and I literally forgot all the strategy I have made.”

The Analytical Reasoning and Decision Making section had 24 questions in total with 16 questions on logical caselets and 8 on decision making sets. The expected cut-off for this section could be 22.

The Data Interpretation and Quantitative Ability section had 43 questions on number system, arithmetic, algebra, geometry and mensuration, data interpretation and data sufficiency. The expected cut-off for this particular section could be 30.

Verbal ability and Logical Reasoning section had 34 questions in total. There were two page long reading comprehension passages (RC). Para jumbles, punctuation, fill in the blanks, logical reasoning and odd one out were other forms of questions in this section. Expected cut-off for this particular section is likely to be 26.

ESSAY: As usual XAT exam included essay writing for which 20 minutes time was allotted. The topic for the essay was, “The statesman who would attempt to direct private people in what manner they ought to employ their capitals, would not only load himself with a most unnecessary attention, but assume an authority which could safely be trusted to no council and senate whatever, and which would nowhere be so dangerous as in the hands of a man who had folly and presumption enough to fancy himself fit to exercise it.”

Aspirants were required to give judgment on this with appropriate justification and corroborate it with example.

Overall picture

XAT is known as the toughest management entrance exams in India and aspirants who took XAT 2011 already have had tasted its flavor. The XAT 2011 could be rated as a difficult paper; hence a low cut-off is expected this time.

The results of XAT 2011 will be available on XLRI website (http://www.xlri.net.in/) by January 31, 2011.
