Fourteenth Annual XLRI Dr. JRD Tata Oration
On Business Ethics

The JRD Tata Oration on Business Ethics, organized by the XLRI JRD Tata Foundation for Business Ethics, has been an annual feature in the XLRI Calendar since 1991.

The Annual Oration Series that is eagerly awaited in the Business Circuit of the Country has been in the forefront as a source of fresh perspectives to this topic of eternal relevance, Business Ethics that of late has seen debates raging in different arenas as to where the thin line needs to be drawn.

The Annual Ethics Oration is delivered by an eminent leader, known for intelligence, enterprise, social and ethical concern. While Dr. J. R. D. Tata himself delivered the first Oration in 1991, personalities of repute such as Ramachandra Guha and Mark Tully have delivered it in different points of time over the years.

The Fourteenth Annual XLRI Dr. JRD Tata Oration on Business Ethics was delivered by renowned academician and author, Dr. James Spillane, Joint Professor of Economics at the Gregorian University in Rome, Italy and Sanata Dharma University and Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta, Indonesia at 6 pm on Monday, November 29, 2004 at the Tata Auditorium, XLRI Jamshedpur. The function started with a welcome address by Mr. B. Muthuraman, the Managing Director of Tata Steel and Chairman, governing board, XLRI. The speaker was introduced by Fr. A. C. Jesurajan, Secretary, governing body, XLRI. The event started with a 10-minute audiovisual on JRD Tata, the year 2004 being his birth centenary.

The Oration forms part of the role that XLRI has chosen to play so as to highlight the problem of ethics in India and the world today and to help bring ethics into the mainstream of everyday business in general and our way of life in particular.

Dr. James J. Spillane, a professor of Sanata Dharma University, Indonesia, who delivered a speech on "Tourism in developing countries: Neocolonialism or nation builder", said the tourism industry employs about 240 million people and earns a revenue of 3.4 million dollar across the world. According to Father Spillane, the industry serves as a vehicle for nation building. The discussions held in due course of the evening provided them with tips on how tourism can be used as an effective tool to promoting business ethics.

The event concluded with a grand dinner hosted at the residence of Mr B. Muthuraman.
