President of India Inaugurates
International Conference on Statistics

at ISB Hyderabad

Hyderabad, December 29, 2004: His Excellency Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, President of India, today inaugurated an International Conference on the FUTURE OF STATISTICAL THEORY, PRACTICE AND EDUCATION at the Indian School of Business. The aim of this conference is to bring the experts from all over the world to present their work to the young researchers in India and interact with them.

Addressing the distinguished audience through a video conference, the President said, "I see a very bright future for the applications of statistics in India. The country's development programme is intertwined with the future of statistics. I also suggest that the statistical community work on integrated prediction and warning methods of the tsunami phenomenon, which can benefit many countries in the world."

Welcoming the delegates to the conference Prof. Rammohan Rao, Dean of ISB said, "The Indian School of Business is honoured to host this prestigious conference. I hope that the delegates will have an intellectually stimulating experience and also a very pleasant and unforgettable experience at the ISB."

Talking about the importance of Statistics Prof. C. R. Rao, F.R.S., Padma Vibhushan awardee, said, "Statistics is the science, technology of creating new knowledge. The areas of statistical applications are increasing and there is a need to forge new methods of statistics to meet new situations."

Prof. Chen, President of Institution of Mathematical Statistics, Prof. Scheuren, President of American Statistical Association, and Prof. Balakrishnan, President of International Indian Statistical Association were also present on this occasion.

There will be a special session on statistics for national security in this conference. About 250 research papers will be presented at this conference which has attracted about 300 participants from India and abroad. The researchers attending this conference will present the current state of the art in different areas of statistics and discuss possible future developments
