"The HR Professionals of Tomorrow - Are we Future Ready?"

The role of HR is to deliver human capabilities to the customer. This was the view expressed by Commodore D. K. Mohapatra, VSM, talking to the students of Xavier Institute of Management, during his visit to the campus.

After an illustrious career in the Indian Navy, spanning 3 decades, Commodore Mohapatra is presently the Global Head, HR Sourcing, Tata Consultancy Services and under his able leadership, the organization has achieved greater heights of success as can be inferred from the recent rating of TCS as the Best Employer in India survey by Hewitt Associates and CNBC TV 18. Among his many achievements at TCS is the fully automated e-recruiting initiative.

Addressing the students, who would be leading the HR initiatives of several MNCs in the future, Commodore Mohapatra stressed on several aspects of contemporary HR practices, which would be vital to their success in the future. One important advice was to leverage the utility of IT in every possible field where there was a scope for it. Other initiatives included defining clearly the short term and long term HR deliverables.

Traditionally, he mentioned, the HR professionals have been accused of not taking a holistic picture of the business and not developing a systems approach to HR. The remedy to such "sins", as he termed them, was to develop a thorough understanding of the organization and a certain degree of consistency in the HR functions of the organization. Mohapatra also emphasized on the importance of improving the image and credibility of HR and HRD within the organization by adopting a customer centric approach towards the internal associates also.

Some of the challenges faced by the modern HR professional include evolved and changed job patterns, entrepreneurial boom, high talent replenishment costs and changing societal values. These challenges, combined with the increased competition and the complexities of the relational and virtual environment, make the HR profession a highly exciting and demanding one.

While concluding, Commodore Mohapatra emphasized that the new roles that HR was expected to play included leadership transformation and key talent retention along with coping with knowledge management, workforce scenario planning and continuous change management.

Hence, he called for the emerging HR professionals to be strategically proactive and move from the traditional role of support function to that of a business partner and change agent whose major responsibilities include strategy orientation of the HR practices and being a role model and thought leader for the new economy.
