Systems Continuum 2005 held at SJMSOM, IIT Bombay Product centric opportunities and challenges were given a thoughtful insight into by Sumit Virmani, Group Marketing Manager, Infosys. Quoting the "Finacle" product as a prime example, he spoke of how firms in India can excel at coming up with new products, in addition to services. Risk mitigation tools and the prerequisites for the development of such products were discussed. According to him, a broader spectrum of opportunities is however becoming available to Indian players in areas such as embedded Software; development and delivery of specialized components; tapping offshore product development opportunities; product acquisition and enhancement and developing shrink wrapped products, and one needs to tap into these lines. Mr. Jayaram Srinivasan, VP, Supply Chain Management, SAP Labs India talked about the world of enterprise solutions and application and in detail about the growth of the significance of ERP and the growth of SAP AG itself, from being a small company with revenues of 0.3m euros in 1972 to the 7.5b euro behemoth that it is today. He also presented the evolution of business platform software in SAP, starting with the R/1 in 1972, which slowly metamorphosed into the very popular R/3 by the year 1992. He then went on to analyzed how this client-server architecture was then integrated with the Internet and the World Wide Web with the introduction of mySAP.com and finally the SAP Net Weaver in 2004. Mr. Srinivasan provided the audience of students, delegates and industry professionals a peek at the next generation of Enterprise Solutions, which would provide the much-needed strategic flexibility and help align the business with the information technology. In addition to these thought-provoking insights, a workshop was conducted by MAQ software, a CMM level 4 company, on cutting edge gadgets for managers. The director Mr. Vikram Kumar emphasized on the fact how in an accelerating world, a mangers' success depends to a large extent on the effective leverage of cutting edge technologies.
