Manufacturing Emperor "Timken" Visits NITIE, Mumbai

Mumbai, February 23, 2005: He was straightforward and jubilant in his opinions. When he talked about the heat of Rajasthan, older investment policies of India and his demands from NITIE, the power of words was clearly visible on his face.

He was W. R. "Tim" Timken, Jr., Chairman - Board of Directors, The Timken Company, one of the oldest and biggest manufacturing firm in the world.

He visited the flush green campus of NITIE on 23rd February 2005 and interacted with the faculty and students. Replying to the questions asked by the students, he was flamboyant to say that he came there considering the technological base of students from Industrial Engineering. The manufacturing sector in India is quite less addressed but the preferential selection of management jobs by Industrial Engineering students is sending a positive sign to the manufacturing firms, which are having plans to invest in India.

Prof. Ashok K. Pundir, Dean Placements, affirmed and said that Post Graduate in Industrial Engineering program intakes First Class Engineering Graduates and develops them as managers of technological organizations with concepts and tools applicable immediately in their future management roles.

Prior to this, Mr. Timken addressed the students on his journey in leading the change at The Timken Company. Talking about his company's displacement from US, he explained why different companies are moving out of US.

He said that many manufacturing companies are moving out of US and Timken being the supplier's supplier has to come along with them. In India, it landed up in the wake of similar causes. The talks of establishing base in India were started quite early but because of no opening in the markets; it took time for them to start a manufacturing facility. They have established a manufacturing firm in 1989 in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand.

Mr. Timken is the Chairman of the board of the Securities Investor Protection Corporation and is the director of Diebold, Incorporated. He is also the Chairman of The Manufacturing Institute and past Chairman of the National Association of Manufacturers.

He graduated from Phillips Andover Academy at Andover, Stanford University and the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration. He is also a Chevalier in the French Legion of Honor.
