IIM Kozhikode Strives to Make a Difference With Annual SSG Fete

Kunnamangalam, Calicut, January 28, 2006: Who says MBA students are driven by the bottom line? That all they care about are salaries and brand names? The Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode, proved that even the most ambitious of future managers have a social conscience, with the Annual SSG Fete, which was held at the institute's campus. This is in line with IIMK's philiosophy of inculcating concern for the larger society.

The Social Service Group (SSG) of IIMK was started in 1999 as an ad-hoc body in the aftermath of the Orissa Cyclone. It was registered with the State Govt. of Kerala in 2000, with the objective of making a positive, ongoing impact on the community within and around IIMK through the voluntary efforts of the students. Over the past seven years, the activities of SSG have included blood donation camps, fund raising through the annual fete and deploying these funds for various community development programmes. The primary focus of SSG is on improving education and health, with special efforts to reach women and children.

This year's event was a huge success and saw active participation from students, faculty and the local community. There were a variety of events to entertain the fete-goers, including games like darts, card games, French cricket and fun-games involving water-filled balloons. A DJ played pulsating music to the requests by the visitors. Foodstalls and a MILMA milk bar catered to the hungry. Raffle games, sponsored by TIME institute, with prices worth over seven thousand saw large participation. Proceeds from exclusively designed T-shirts also contributed to the fund.

SSG is expecting to raise over thirty thousand rupees with this fete. This money will help the charities in Kunnamagalam and Calicut that the SSG supports. It will also provide scholarships for the economically backward children of Kunnamangalam and help an old age home in Calicut.

Concluded.
