Sensex Demystified in Media Summit at NITIE, Mumbai

Mumbai, July 31, 2006: The PGDIE batch of NITIE successfully organized a Media Summit on 28th July 2006, on the topic "SENSEX: Riding on a Horseback". The purpose of the summit was to enlighten the students about the intricacies of the so-called "volatile" share market, the parameters governing it with a focus of simulating the BSE Sensex.

Eminent media personalities were invited for presentation and discussion on the given topic. The dignitaries who graced the occasion were: -

  • Mr. Vijay Shekhar, Chief of Bureau, Zee News

  • Mr. B. S. Reddy, Associate Editor, Hindustan Times

  • Mr. Kapil Krishnan, Chief Financial Officer, India Infoline

  • Ms. Rachna Monga, Senior Correspondent, Business World

The event was formally inaugurated by our Associate Dean - Placements, Prof. Ashok K. Pundir. In his warm welcome speech, he commended the efforts of the students of PGDIE for this endeavor. He also appreciated the Students' Media Team, IE Times, for selecting a topic that has always had an enigma associated with it. He requested the guest panel to dwell deep into the issue to expose every facet in the knowledge endeavor.

After the welcome speech, the round of presentations began. The first to address was Senior Correspondent of Business World, Ms. Rachna Monga. She explained the Basics of BSE Sensex, and elaborated with examples that Sensex and GDP growth rate are not related. She also highlighted the fact that the bullish run in the market cannot continue forever and the fluctuations in Sensex should not come as a surprise to anyone.

Next to address was the Associate Editor of Hindustan Times, Mr. B. S. Reddy. He helped the students gain a greater insight into the topic by covering aspects like effect of global market trends (e.g., oil price hike), role of FIIs in Indian share market, political and social factors influencing the market. He also gave some tips for newcomers before investing in the share market. His presentation was very informative as it reflected the chronological order of events from the year 1991, highlighting peaks and crashes of Sensex.

The Chief Financial Officer of India Infoline, Mr. Kapil Krishnan added new dimensions by elaborating the aspects of investment in equities. The focus of his presentation was retail financial services at inflection point, which is nothing but a moment of dramatic change, especially in the development of a company, industry or market. He shed light on mutual funds, right from evolution to revolution, and also explained the role of mutual funds in stabilizing the fluctuation in the stock market.
