ABM Summer Placements at IIM Ahmedabad Saw RPG, Nestle & MCX as First Time Recruiters

The ABM Summer Placements concluded on 1 November 2006 with more than one offer per student for a batch of 28. The event saw participation by several companies like RPG, Nestle and MCX, for the first time, which indicates the growing need for a specialized course in the current economic setting.

"Students had multiple choices in their summer placement not only in terms of sector they wanted to experience but also the kind of projects they would like to do," commented Aniruddha Banerjee, the ABM Placement Coordinator.

Enthusiasm of the students is reflected in the words of a first year student, "I decided to join RPG Groups in their retail division. As this sector is growing at a tremendous pace, it will offer me dynamism and challenges which I want from a job and are pivotal for one’s career growth."

Participation by two major commodity exchanges, viz., MCX and NCDEX reflect on the growing relevance of agri-business in the economy. 9 students were placed with these companies. Anand, who opted to join this sector, said, "I opted for this field due to the exponential growth witnessed by this sector and considerable entrepreneurial opportunities which this sector offers."

RPG and Godrej Agrovet recruited students for their booming retail operations while ITC recruited students for their supply chain operations. Nestle offered positions in procurement, ICICI Bank recruited students for agri-finance and micro banking, Coromandal Fertilizers Limited and Monsanto selected students for agricultural inputs, and Venkys’ for livestock and poultry sector.

There was a substantial increase in the stipend amount offered this year to the students. The average stipend increased by 25 percent to Rs. 15,000 per month this year while the highest stipend jumped from Rs. 15,000 per month last year to Rs 20,000 per month this time.

Prof. Vijaya Sherry Chand, PGP-ABM Chairperson, attributes the good response to growing agribusiness, particularly in retail and commodity sector. Positive response from new players like RPG, MCX show that the programme has established well. "We are constantly strengthening our focus to meet the industry requirements," he said.

Concluded.
