BIM Students Learn the Importance of Personal Leadership in Corporate Life

Bharathidasan Institute of Management, one of the top B-schools in India, Banglore Campus, as a part of "Meet the Leaders of Corporate World Series" - Rendezvous, got to experience the talk on 'Personal Leadership in the Corporate Life'. Symphony HR Services Vice President Mr. Mahalingam shared his rich experience on leadership.
He stressed on the need to understand one's strengths and being aware of personal weaknesses in order to manage one's personal and professional life. He emphasized on building fortune on one's strengths and concentrate on becoming a brand.

Brands command three basic tenets: -

  • Premium

  • Trustworthiness

  • Credibility

The above tenets when adhered to on personal level can work wonders in corporate and social life of individuals.

Mr. Mahalingam stressed upon the following principles to be followed to become a leader: -

  • Developing One's Circle of Influence, Concern and Network - This can be done by developing one's ambit of knowledge by which a person gets to influence others.

  • Managing Conflicts - Frictions are not necessarily bad. But in case of conflict, it makes a good start to reconcile by shedding one's ego.

  • Managing Contributions - This comes from persistent involvement of a person in whatever he/she does.

He also enlightened the students by adducing three behavioral characteristics which differentiate an executive from a non-executive. They include: -

  • Role Making to Role Taking - Role Making involves making the best of the work assigned, while Role Taking includes just work for the sake of doing work.

  • Role Centering to Role Entering - Role Centering hovers around developing skills to become critical to the organizations functions, whereas Role Entering is a term with less weightage where individual enters an organization to just receive salary and contribute very less.

  • Role Linking to Role Shrinking - Linking oneself to the organization makes an individual more productive and brings a sense of responsibility into life, whereas Shrinking oneself involves keeping oneself away from organizational visions and missions.

He also said that when it comes to managing your career, don't compromise on account of values and ethics. Fulfillment of wishes should be confined to every stage in life and not by getting complacent after reaching a target. He also discussed the issues of work life balance.

The students were the happiest lot after having a great learning experience when the corporate world requires one to be emotionally intelligent and smart.

    Concluded.
