Post-event Press-release

Previous

Mr. H. M. Nerurkar, Vice President, Tata Steel, was the next to share his thoughts with the gathering. Giving an historical overview of manufacturing trends, he highlighted concepts like the assembly line production introduced by Henry Ford to modern concepts of total productive maintenance (TPM) to suggest the innovations, which have taken place in this sphere. "Innovation in production techniques along with a constant endeavor to reduce cost not affecting the quality should be the focus of the manufacturing sector in India", he commented.

He gave an instance from Tata Steel where they had successfully trebled their output even after reducing their workforce by half as an example where the world productivity standards could be reached even after reducing human recourse of the company. He added, "One who is more adaptable to changing trends would do well in the future", as an ending remark.

Mr. C. R. Pradhan, CMD, Nalco gave the public sector perspective to the discussion by putting forward the new success stories from the manufacturing units PSUs today. He said, "Although factors like dearth of technical labour, social obligations towards masses, employment generation might have impinged the growth of manufacturing sector, the scenario has now changed with most PSU's performing on the stage." He too agreed with concepts like TPM whereby he insisted that productivity of any concern wouldn't ever improve until it takes care of its equipments.

The Q&A session then allowed students to have a free interaction with the panel. Questions from varied topics like importance of labour reforms, corporate social responsibilities of companies, improvement of labour productivity in India were addressed by the speakers. It was a very enriching experience for the entire student community at XIMB as they got to learn not only about the current scenario in the manufacturing sector from the industry experts but also measures that have to be implemented in the future. Hopefully most of them would employ these learnings when they take the Indian manufacturing sector to the world stage as the next-gen CEOs.

Concluded.
