IIM Calcutta to Shortlist Candidates on the Basis of Minimum Cutoff Scores

IIM Calcutta has announced its minimum cutoff scores for CAT 2007. The new selection criteria has been notified in CAT 2007 Bulletin. It will be applicable to reserved category also. Only those potential candidates will be called for GD and Interview process that are able to get minimum percentage as announced in CAT 2007 Bulletin.
Main purpose of minimum cutoff score is to introduce more transparency into the admission process and selecting only those capable students who are able to bear the rigorous academic pressure.

The IIM-C notification in the CAT 2007 Bulletin states: "A candidate (including a reserved category candidate) to be short-listed for GD and PI for admission to post-graduate programmes should obtain a minimum of 20%, 20% and 10% in 'quantitative', 'logic and data interpretation' and 'verbal' sections, respectively. The actual cut-off used for short-listing, however, may be higher than the minimum cut-off and would depend upon the performance of candidates in CAT 2007. Cut-off may be different for different categories (e.g., General, SC, ST and PWD) of candidates."

In CAT 2006, IIM Ahmedabad had declared its minimum cutoff scores for selection, and now IIM-C has followed IIM-A's footsteps.

Underlining minimum cutoff scores might be justified by the institute by stating that they are doing it to safeguard the quality of applicants in the most prestigious management institute, but it could also be seen as a preventive step against admitting below average students in case the OBC quota is implemented by the Union Human Resource Development Ministry.

Concluded.
