Arvind Aggarwal, VP-AmEx, Interacts with IIM-K Students

The Leadership Series at the Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode, started off with a bang over the weekend with Mr. Arvind Agarwal, VP - Risk, Information Management & Banking, American Express, sharing his insights on Leadership in general and the Risk Management Business in particular.

His talk identified the emerging trends in the global and Indian business arenas and emphasized how they complicated the business situation, thus, making the role of modern day leaders more difficult. Delving deep into the Risk Management Business, he said it was important to understand the various kinds of risks that prevailed in the market, and took the students through the entire process of Consumer Management - right from acquisition to collection. He stressed upon the importance of understanding the intricacies of customer behavior to be able to increase value for trade partners and organizations. That, he said, was the key to being a good credit manager.

Speaking on leadership, he said that the most crucial characteristic of being a leader is to gain the confidence of your co-workers, particularly your team, if you are leading one, and making them more comfortable working with you. "Leadership is situational," he said, "There could be a situation where a leader has to become a follower depending on the nature of the project. Nobody is a superhero in today's world."

The Leadership Series is organized by the Industry Interaction Cell, a student's body at IIMK and was instituted in the year 2004.

Concluded.
