IIM Shillong to Start Functioning from Year 2008

The IIMs have been informed by the HRD Ministry that the newly proposed Indian Institute of Management (IIM) at Shillong, Meghalaya, will become operational from the academic year 2008.

This comes as good news for all those MBA aspirants who're applying to the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) this year. This means that in addition to the existing six IIMs, students appearing for the Common Admission Test (CAT) this year will also be short-listed for the IIM in Shillong. IIM aspirants, however, are unaware of the new campus as the CAT Bulletin, released on 15 July 2007, only mentions the existing six IIMs, for which students need to tick-mark their preferences.

The new institute will be named after ex-Prime Minister Mr. Rajiv Gandhi and will be known as Rajiv Gandhi Indian Institute of Management (RGIIM), Shillong. The government of Meghalaya has helped in setting the institute by providing 120 acres of land free of cost. The grant for the institute will be available as Rs. 120 crore for non-recurring expenditure over a period of five years and Rs. 45 crore for recurring expenditure over a period of six years. Initially, the institute will operate from a temporary campus at Mayurbhanj Complex, which was earlier occupied by the North Eastern Hill University. The permanent campus for the institute will be constructed in the new Shillong Township.

During the initial phase, the institute will offer a 2-Year Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGPM), and in future, it would also offer some short-term programmes of local relevance. The institute has a plan of selecting only 30 students for the first year, 120 students for the third year and 180 students for the sixth year.

The main purpose of establishing an IIM in the north-eastern state is to provide better opportunities for higher studies to students from this region, who otherwise come to metros like Delhi and Mumbai for this purpose. With this new IIM at Shillong, the number of IIMs in the country will become seven. Other six IIMs include the ones situated in Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, Lucknow, Indore and Kozhikode.

Concluded.
