Samiksha '07 at NITIE Proves to be a Fruitful Endeavor

In continuation of its glorious tradition of providing a transparent student-industry interface, PGDIE students came out with yet another edition of SAMIKSHA, an event that brings together stalwarts from the industry onto a common panel to discuss an issue of relevance to the industry.
This time the theme for the discussion was "Banking in a Developing Economy: Challenges & Opportunities". The varied panel had representation from different levels of the banking industry - the regulator, the regulated, the new entrant as well as established giants.

The panel was graced by the following experts: -

  • Mr. Amit Kumar, Executive Vice President, Corporate & Institutional Banking, Yes Bank

  • Mr. Devashish Ghosh, Head (Organisation & Methods), BNP Paribas

  • Mr. P. R. Ravimohan, General Manager, RBI

  • Mr. Vikram Subrahmanyam, Director (Operations & Technology), Citigroup

  • Mr. Rajeev Varma, Senior Director Research, DSP Merrill Lynch (India)

The discussion was moderated by Mr. Johan Mundat from the Economic Times. The enlightening discussion touched upon various factors of relevance to the banking industry in the present context. Mr. Amit Kumar started the discussion by covering the background in general of the issue. He then went on to speak about the major policy developments in recent times and its implications for the banking industry.

He also discussed the effects of the entry of foreign players in a hitherto fenced playing field. Mr. Ghosh elaborated on Operational Risk Management, with emphasis on the Basel Committee norms. Starting at the very idea behind the Basel norms, he covered various aspects of the convention. Mr. Ravimohan presented the perspective of the primary governing body and delivered an extremely lucid account of the roles of the regulator in an economy that is witnessing a paradigm change. Tracing the evolution of regulation over the years, he elaborated on the focus areas and listed the future challenges for the banking industry from the point of view of the regulating body.

Mr. Subrahmanyam spoke of what needs to be done to accomplish the growth rate envisaged in the 11th plan and how banks stand to benefit from the scenario if they make the right moves. Listing the key areas to be worked upon, he discussed issues like financial deepening and capacity expanding, rural to urban migration and financial inclusion among others. Mr. Varma focused on the techniques involved in and factors considered for the valuation of Banks in India and abroad. His engaging account of the reat for the hard core finance enthusiasts among students.

The event was, in entirety, an extremely fruitful endeavor. Participants from the industry as well as those from various B-schools such as Narsee Monjee, IIM Kozhikode, etc., invariably found the exercise an enriching one.

    Concluded.
