Cdr. (Retd.) Harish Verma, Nelito Systems Ltd., Lectures at SIIB-Pune

The guest for recent guest lecture on Friday, July 27, 2007, was Cdr. (Retd.) Harish Verma. An electrical engineer from Roorkee, he has over three decades of experience in defense services and corporate world. Currently, he is with Nelito Systems Ltd.,
a Tata Group Co., providing IT solutions like ERP, SLC Management, Consultancy, etc. He is holding the post of SGM (HR, QA & Admin.).

His address was titled 'Bootstrapping', which literally means 'getting ready'. The focus of the lecture was on identification of main ingredients of success. He described that intelligence, task-related knowledge, self-confidence, high energy level and power to influence people are the basic requirements. These need to be complemented with time management, positive attitude and professionalism. When we talk about the 80:20 rule, that 80% of the world's resources are consumed by 20% of the people, then these are the factors which differentiate those 20 from the other 80.

"There is no magic to success," he quoted from Akio Morito. He also stressed that as one moves up the ladder of success, virtues like teamwork, high ambitions, professional ethics, marketing and projection skills, and skills to handle bosses come more to the fore-front. He added that the endeavor of everyone should be to lead a wholesome life. Success is a subjective term and every person defines it in his own way. So success or failure can't be permanent, these have to be progressive. As per one's definition, one should accept failures and then one should move toward success. Mistakes lead towards failures so these should be fixed on the first day itself.

He shared his experiences in defense services and the differences he found in corporate world from the defense one. He told that confidence is a necessary element to success but it should be differentiated from over-confidence.

He concluded by quoting Albert Einstein, "Success is progressive realization of a worthy goal."

Concluded.
