Senior Fund Manager, DSP Merrill Lynch, Speaks at JBIMS

Mr. Anup Maheshwari, Senior Fund Manager, DSP Merrill Lynch, visited JBIMS for a session on Fund Management and the Mutual Funds Industry. Mr. Maheshwari is an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow. He served as Chief Investment Officer (CIO) at HSBC Asset Management before joining DSP Merrill Lynch
in 2006 for a second stint with the company. He was ranked amongst one of the Top Equity Fund Managers in India by Business Today in 2005.

The Mutual Funds Industry has witnessed remarkable growth over the last few years and currently stands at Rs. 4,00,000 crore in terms of Assets Under Management (AUM). Mr. Maheshwari explained the importance of various roles in mutual fund industry such as Investments, Sales and Marketing, Risk, Compliance, Operations and Finance. He emphasized the importance of a strong distribution system that includes national and regional level distributors and individual financial advisors to high net worth individuals.

Describing the process in which investment decisions are made, he explained how around 500-600 companies are first identified as those worthy of institutional investment. The next step involves identifying companies that are scalable and can generate large market capitalization. An important factor that has a bearing on the investment decision is the level of management comfort that is developed by meeting the senior managers of the company to assess management quality.

Mr. Maheshwari also described the different products that mutual fund companies offer such as equity-based funds, hybrid funds, fixed income products and derivative-based products. Most derivative products are currently based on Arbitrage, Hedging and Stock Futures.

The session was highly interactive and proved to be an occasion of invaluable learning for the entire batch of 2008 at JBIMS.

Concluded.
