XLRI Conducts Seminar on Industrial Relations

There is no better teacher than experience, and no better way of learning than to interact with those who have experienced it all. Following this maxim is XLRI, Jamshedpur, one of the premiers B-schools of the country, through a seminar on Industrial Relations in the Service Sector and Women in Trade Unions on
Sunday, the 26th of August.

Organized by Fire@x, the Forum for Industrial Relations, the guest speakers were eminent trade union leaders, Mr. Pabitro Chatterjee, President, American Express Employee's Union, and Mrs. Nisha Ghatkar, General Secretary of HSBC Employee Association Mumbai & President of HSBC Employee Association of India. Also present was Miss Cecelia Viegas, Vice President of HSBC Employee Association of India.

Primarily focusing on employee relations between unions and management in the banking sector, the speakers highlighted the fact that without trade unions management would have a hard time managing large organizations. While sharing experiences and instances to validate their points of view, the speakers also reflected on the changing role of unions and the use of participatory models such as the one used in HSBC.

The talk was attended by students and faculty alike, which provided for a healthy interaction between the speakers and the audience. Relevant questions were asked on diverse topics from the recent strikes in the banking sector to the emerging role of women in trade unions, also a theme of the session. Joining the speakers to share their points of view were two eminent professors of XLRI, Mr. Pranabesh Ray, who set the context of the session, and Dr. E. M. Rao, who gave the closing address.

Concluded.
