IIM Kozhikode Contributes to Various Noble Causes for the Underprivileged

IIM grads don't always make headlines with lofty pay packages and lucrative career options. The students down south at IIM Kozhikode are not only attracting the biggest firms during their placement season but also helping out the not-so-privileged others, in their own simple ways.

The Social Services Group (SSG) at IIM-K has come out with a new innovative scheme called 'meal-a-month' to meet social causes. Under the present scheme, the members of the IIM-K student community donate the equivalent of a meal every month towards the fund needed for such initiatives. This year, the group started a School Scholarships Plan to provide education kits to needy and deserving students across schools in Calicut. These kits comprise of basic essentials like uniforms, notebooks, pencils and an umbrella. The students are presently being identified in consultation with the school authorities and so far 70 students have been provided assistance in this ongoing program.

Driving further through an in-campus "Effectiveness & Dedication Survey", the group has also launched an 'internal education drive' for the IIM-K community members, in order to equip them with skills to perform their day-to-day activities better. In the initial phase of the new drive, spoken Hindi classes shall be conducted for the support staff (security, housekeeping personnel, and so on) by Mr. Balkrishnan Nair, from the Gandhi Peace Foundation, Calicut.

Mr. Sanjog Jolly, a member of the SSG group, felt that it was still early days for both the concepts, and the ongoing initiatives stand to benefit a lot of people in the long run. Meanwhile, the SSG has also been providing monetary support to the pain and palliative care centre in the city. Till date the group has been able to assimilate donations of almost Rs. 27,000 for the purchase of medicines for 36 chronically ill patients in the Kunnamanglam area in Calicut. Continuing with the one year association with the center, the group intends to generate greater awareness about palliative care which is relatively a new concept in India.

Surely, these are lessons well learnt for the future managers as they plan to imbibe in themselves the 'corporate social responsibility' early!

Concluded.
