JBIMS-Mumbai Plays Host to Noted Management Guru & Author, Gurcharan Das

JBIMS, Mumbai played host to the noted management guru and author, Mr. Gurcharan Das, on the 12th of October. He was at his incisive best and minced no words when it came to speaking his mind.

Speaking to an enthralled audience, Mr. Das weaved the story of India, its past, and its future in his usual, simplistic, yet binding style. Quoting Aristotle and Adam Smith, he reiterated that it was the middle class and competitive markets that would decide the future of our country. He spoke of the untold virtues of democracy and why in spite of its slow nature and sometimes frustrating pace of reform, it was still the best form of polity for India.

Mr. Das described the Indian model of growth as unique and different from that of the other Asian countries including China, in that it was predominantly based on domestic drivers like services and consumption whereas that of the others was based on drivers like exports, manufacturing, and investment.

And while he expressed concern over India skipping the industrial revolution altogether, the lack of proper governance, and apathy of the middle class towards the political system, he was absolutely certain that our progress, although slow, will be steady and more assured.

Answering questions of the students, he said that how you achieve success is more important than what you achieve. He also shed light on how learning to write a one page memo at work place enhanced his ability to be simple and lucid.

The session ended with a thunderous applause from the rapt audience and the acknowledgement that Mr. Gurcharan Das was a perfect role model for all aspiring business leaders of tomorrow.

Concluded.
