P&G Organizes Case Study Competition 'Big Leap' at XLRI

SAPPHIRE, the students’ association in the field of Human Resource Management at XLRI, organized a Case Study Competition called 'Big Leap' in association with Proctor & Gamble (P&G) on 3rd October 2007. The event was aimed at the analysis of various management related issues involved in the acquisition of Gillette by P&G.

Today, many mergers and acquisitions fail to achieve the desired synergies because the organization issues are not given the importance they deserve. Companies do announce that their mergers have been successful, but they also accept that they have not been able to derive the kind of benefits that they expected to, from a merger or an acquisition.

The ‘Big Leap’ event was an effort to bring insights to students of XLRI on how business managers can work on right organization priorities to create a sustainable competitive advantage for a corporation. Emphasis was laid on organization design and selection of the right distribution channels after the merger. Issues of cultural integration between the two organizations were also addressed in the case. The case study is just the first phase of a bigger event organized by P&G. The second phase will follow soon.

The competition saw enthusiastic participation by the students both from PMIR (Personnel Management & Industrial Relations) and BM (Business Management) batches, with 33 teams consisting of 5 members, sending in their entries.

Out of them, 7 teams were short listed for the final round, which involved making a presentation to the senior HR team from P&G. This team consisted of top management of P&G including Mr. Varun Bhatia, VP & Head - HR, Asia Pacific, Mr. Mohit Nayyar, Country Manager - HR, India, Ms. Sonali Roychoudhary, Head HR - MDO & Product Supply, India and Mr. Surya Kant Rai.

After evaluating the presentations by the students, the P&G team presented its own analysis of the case study. Thereafter, the floor was opened for questions from the students and finally, the winners were declared and prizes were distributed.

Concluded.
