Valediction Function of First 6-Months' General Management Programme for Defence Officers Held at IIM-L Noida Campus

IIM Lucknow's Noida Campus organised the Valediction Function of its first 6-Months' General Management Programme for Defence Officers, on January 2nd, 2009 at the campus. General Management Programme (GMP) for Defence Officers is a programme

specially designed for Defence Officers (Army, Navy and Air Force) to enable them to utilize their talents in the field of management after serving the forces of our country. The Programme started on 21st July 2008 for 24 weeks and concluded on 2nd January 2009. There were a total 60 participants in the programme, out of which 8 were lady officers.

Chief Guest, Cmde. Rajiv Karsolia, Principal Director (Employment), Ministry of Defence, Government of India, inaugurated the programme by lighting the lamp along with Gp. Capt. Venkataramanan and the officials from IIM Lucknow.

Programme Directors, Prof. N. K. Gupta and Prof. S. C. Bansal, welcomed the guests and participants on the occasion and shared the details of the programme and what went into customising a programme for a batch of defence officers with such varied experience within the armed forces.

The Chief Guest for the function, Cmde. Rajiv Karsolia, congratulated the officers and hoped for a bright new and rewarding career ahead for them. "The Demand for Armed Forces personnel in the corporate world has increased phenomenally, despite recession in the recent past, which is a good sign for those aspiring a new career after serving the country on borders," said Cmde. Karsolia. "For the people with right aspirations, there is no dearth of opportunities and IIM Lucknow's Noida Campus has provided the defence officers with the right finesse to shape up their careers in the corporate world well," he added.

The programme was in line with the vision of IIM Lucknow's Noida Campus to provide quality education to people with experience. IIM Lucknow's Noida Campus is conducting its second batch of GMP for Defence Officers from July 2009. After a great experience with the first batch of GMP, Noida Campus will conduct such six months programme every year.

GMP participant, Col. Shekhawat, who was also a part of the Placement Committee (Place Com) for the course, gave a brief on the placement situation. "Many good companies like Larsen & Toubro, Tech Mahindra, Arcil, IBM, etc., have absorbed the participants, with many like Vodafone, Wipro yet to announce their selections," said Col. Shekhawat. Though the placements were thought to be a little difficult due to the continuing recession, the batch has received satisfactory interest from the corporate world.

GMP for Defence Officers offered specializations in Marketing, Human Resources Management, Operations Management, and Strategy. "The six-months course has been action-packed with continuous hard work in honing the skills to prove one in the outside corporate world equally full of challenges like armed forces," said Prerna, a GMP participant. Brigadier Vicky Mehta, a GMP participant, thanked the institute and faculty for imparting the 'Corporate Mantra' by various creative methods of instructions.

Announcements of top rankers of the course and project were made and the certificates were given away to the participants by the Chief Guest.
