IIM-L Grads to Play Management Gurus to Best 60 Students from India During Ocumen 2009
On January 24-25, 2009

In an event unique across global business schools, the graduates of IIM Lucknow will play management mentors to 60 students representing India's best schools .The flagship event "Ocumen 2009" provides a platform for students to experience life at a
top-notch business school. The event helps spread the knowledge about the best practices in the education sector to the schools, which are a vital cog in the development of intellectual capital for the nation.

According to Prof. Amita Mittal, Chairman ,Student's Affairs, IIM Lucknow, "As a reputed and esteemed institute of higher learning, our objective is to contribute towards management development and nurture global, socially-conscious leaders contributing towards upliftment of society. Ocumen is quintessence of our efforts to improve our environs, by investing in the core sector of Education." The event saw initial participation of over 165 schools from across India and the top 15 schools were selected for the event. This is an increase of 50% over the last year.

A unique feature this year is a structured mentorship program for both the students and teachers. Each student will be assigned a mentor to guide the students as they make crucial career choices based on information and not merely hype and perceptions. The event would also see 30 teachers from the participating schools who will also be invited to the campus where they will discuss the best education and management practices from world-renowned management gurus and professors at IIM Lucknow.

Abhishek Venkatesh, Coordinator for Ocumen, said, "The idea of the event is to build a life-long mentor-mentee relationship with the students. The event gives us a chance to give back to society and help make students informed decisions. Most of us didn't have as many options and resulting confusions as the youngsters today, and it is our endeavor to make the hard choices a little easier."

The event would also engage in "training the teachers" exercise, which would see the dissemination of best education practices for the IIMs to the school level. This is because the institute feels that ultimately it's the teachers who shape the thought of young impressionable minds.

The concept by IIM-L grads truly shows that, even in today's times which have seen a decline in Corporate Social Responsibility, there is still hope that leaders of tomorrow would recognize and fulfill their obligations towards society.

Salient Features of the Event

  • Initial participation of over 120 schools from across India. Top 15 schools selected for the event.

  • 15 schools - 60 students & 30 teachers on campus on the day of Ocumen.

  • Students participate in a series of management simulation games that will test their business acumen across the range of functional domains.

  • Teachers will take part in workshops conducted by IIM Lucknow professors that would focus on current and relevant issues facing the Indian education system.

  • Pioneer is the Title Partner, Radio Mirchi is the Radio Partner and Coca Cola is the event sponsor.

  • Pre-event ice-breaker session to be held on January 24th, the main event will be held on January 25th, 2009.

    Concluded.
