Paper Presentation Competition on Global Financial Turmoil Held at SIOM, Nashik

On 17th of January 2009, Symbiosis Institute of Operations Management (SIOM), a constituent of Symbiosis International University, experienced a fantabulous display of knowledge and analytical skills in the Paper Presentation Competition

supported by the Forum of Free Enterprise under the sponsorship of M. R. Pai Foundation. The program was organized with the objective of encouraging future managers to learn the art of public speaking and also to analyse and discuss topical subjects from the management perspective.

The topic for Paper Presentation was 'Global Financial Turmoil: Challenges for India'. The panel of judges included experts from the financial domain, newspaper editors, and faculty members. The chief guest and the moderator for question-answer session was Mr. S. S. Bhandare, Advisor (Economic & Government Policy) of the Tata Strategic Management Group. Also, he has been closely associated with All India Bank Depositors' Association, ASSOCHAM, CII, Bombay Chamber of Commerce and Industry & Indian Merchants' Chamber. The event saw the participation of teams from JDC Bytco Institute of Management Studies & Research, MET Institute of Management and Navjeevan Institute of Management apart from the host institute.

Broadly, the presentations threw light on what caused the financial turmoil world-wide and how various industries and sectors have been affected. The presentations put emphasis on the steps taken by the RBI to enhance credit flow. Further, the participating teams spoke on the Current Fiscal Policy of India, and how the additional fiscal stimulus could compensate for declines in exports, investment and consumption demand.

The event also had the flavour of victory. The winners of the competition were MET Institute of Management and the second prize was bagged by the host institute - SIOM. The winners were felicitated by the Chief Guest, Mr. S. S. Bhandare. In his concluding remarks on the topic, Mr. Bhandare gave an insight on the topic and emphasised on the fact that 'One needs to bear up with the rains in order to see a rainbow'. He correlated as to how same could be applied to financial system. He also made a point that such turmoil could be helpful in finding out and fixing the loop-holes in the existing system.

All in all, the event was an enlightening process for the student community.
