XIM, Bhubaneswar Conducts Training Program on "Building Leadership for Disaster Risk Reduction"

Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar concluded a seven day training programme on "Building leadership for Disaster Risk Reduction". The event was organized by the institute in collaboration with Concern Worldwide
- a voluntary non governmental organization involved in implementing emergency and development programmes in 30 countries across the globe. The event was inaugurated by Mr. Nikunja K. Sundaray, IAS, Special Relief Commissioner and Managing Director, OSDMA.

The seminar was aimed at building the capacity of those involved in disaster risk reduction. At the end of the programme, each participant prepared a personal action / work plan to be implemented by his/her organization.

The programme was attended by 26 senior- and middle-level managers working in various government and non-governmental organizations in India, Nepal and Bangladesh. The participants showed a lot of enthusiasm and interest in the subject and were also enjoying their stay at the campus with lots of other group activities aimed at improving the bonding among them so that they could help each other also in case of need.

Prof. N. Vinod Chandra Menon, Honourable Member, National Disaster Management Authority, Government of India, Dr. Antony Gnanamuthu, German Red Cross, Mr. Vishal Pathak, All India Disaster Management Institute, Allahabad, Mr. T. V. Sebastian, Concern Worldwide, and Prof. S. Peppin, XIM=B, were some of the resource persons, who took various sessions during this 7-day period on subjects related to the topic. These sessions were also aimed at refining participants' leadership skills since disaster management calls for a greater leadership role.

The learning process was designed in such a manner that the participants were able to share and learn from their own experiences, and also from the case studies focussing on the lead role played by the Government of Orissa in the field of Disaster Risk Reduction.

With this programme, XIM-B is able to move further to build a network of organizations from India and other South Asian countries for advocacy, capacity building, and generating local capacity for peace building as well as restoration. The topic for the seminar becomes more relevant in the back-drop of the unfortunate turn of events in Kandhamal region of the state.

Prof. N. Vinod Chandra Menon, Member, National Disaster Management Authority, Government of India, spoke on the topic: 'Climate Change & Conflict - Managing Natural & Man-Made Disasters'.
