Following Dr. Shaw’s speech was a felicitation by the Karnataka State Government’s Principal Secretary for Health, Mr. D. Thangaraj. He lauded the Kartavya event organizers for the excellent choice of location. He went on to elucidate that Bangalore was a good choice because of various reasons including the state government’s efforts and the current industrial scenario there. He clearly expounded the various activities of the state government in collaboration with corporate giants like Infosys, Wipro and Biocon.
He illustratively mentioned the example of Victoria Hospital being supported financially by the Infosys Foundation and the Azim Premji Foundation.

He also elaborated at great length about the telemedicine project involving corporate participation being jointly implemented by the Government of India and the Karnataka Government in nine districts of Karnataka. He disclosed future plans to incorporate all these into a telemedicine trust which will be beneficial to all people irrespective of their locational disadvantages. Towards the end of his speech, he went on to speak about equality of employment opportunities in the private sector. Though an accepted controversial issue open to debate, a quota system in private companies was obviously implied as a way of solving the under-representation of the underprivileged.

Then Dr. Jayasankaran took the stage with a fervent oratorical exposition in which he drew applause from the audience when he stated that Corporate Social Responsibility, sometimes used as a ‘status symbol for corporates’ especially when it was fashionable to talk about it, was a ‘passion for BIM’. He emphatically promised Dr. Shaw that the BIM students would shoulder their responsibilities and cooperate in the execution of initiatives like ArokyaRaksha.

On Day One, the BIMites were elegantly dressed in western formals. Since the train reached Bangalore late, the ladies’ planned to wear their ‘Kartavya Saree’ was postponed to the next day. There was joy and gaiety all around and the festive atmosphere was not much different from the BIM campus’. There was a short tea-break before the start of the first session.
