BIM, Trichy Wins National Summer Project Competition

Bharathidasan Institute of Management has added another feather to its cap by winning the national summer project competition held by Prerana, NITIE.

The team comprising Deepak Kumar Bhatter P, Madhanagopal R. and Rajesh Khanna S. under the guidance of Prof. M. Sankar, won the first prize in the finals of General Management module held at NITIE on Oct. 15, 2004,with IIM Indore snatching runner up. BIM beat competition from other top B-Schools in the country to emerge as champions. Rajasekharan and Kishore Kumar of BIM also came second runners-up in "The Street" - the finance game at NITIE.

Prerana Summer Project Contest is the flagship event of Prerana, NITIE and was the first contest of its kind in the country. It brings together some of the best summer projects done by B-school students in various functional areas across the country. This is then judged by the experienced themselves; an elite panel of industrialists and corporates are the judges.

Prerana 2004 was held from Oct 15-17, 2004 and saw projects from all the top business schools in the country. Mr. Rajan Divekar, Director, AF Ferguson & Co chaired the Jury in the General Management module. Other jury members comprised of Vice-presidents and Directors from companies like Nicholas Piramal, Tata group and Monsanto. At the end of the presentations, the jury addressed and termed this year's presentations as one of the best they have seen.

The award-winning project by BIM was done at The Activists for Social Alternatives (ASA), Trichy, an NGO with a developmental focus since 1986. The project was titled "Designing a social security scheme - Pension for rural women" and was aimed at providing economic security to the ASA members after their retirement age.

The project was a comprehensive one beginning with a market research leading to the design of the financial plan and then culminating with the financial feasibility study and risk analysis for management control purposes. The market research undertaken covered 140 villages in Tamilnadu personally surveying the members of ASA. Management techniques were utilized in all stages of the project including market research, application of the principles of corporate finance and advanced capital budgeting tools. For risk analysis, the team used techniques like Scenario and sensitivity analysis.

The two-month summer project culminated in the development of a Unit Linked Pension Scheme (ULPS), which comprises of 4 different plans. ULPS is an innovation in the sense that it is the first unit linked pension plan in the country, which is able to meet specifically all the needs and challenges of a micro-finance product.

Appreciating the project and terming it excellent, the jury specifically highlighted to the fact that in projects done at NGO's, this level of involvement and detailed study was really encouraging and heartening.

Mr. S. Devarajan, Chairman and MD, ASA at the end of the project had appreciated the initiatives taken up by the students and analysis of the project from all aspects. He also appreciated the leadership capabilities displayed by the team in its working by bringing a lot of innovation to the project.
