MDI Gurgaon is becoming breeding ground
for IIM Directors

After Dr. Preetam Singh (previous director of IIM Lucknow) and Dr. Devi Singh (current director of IIM Lucknow) - both from MDI Gurgaon - P. Parashar is tipped to be the new Director of IIM Indore, replacing S. Sudarshanam. P. Parashar, who is currently a faculty member in the Management Development Institute, Gurgaon, will take over on April 5.

According to government sources, though S. Sudarshanam has been recalled, the ministry has not officially issued an order, as it will violate the electoral code of conduct.

IIM sources say Sudarshanam's stand on several issues was varied to those of the ministry's, and his recall just a day after the institute decided to go by the order of the Supreme Court on the fee cut issue, does appear quite suspicious.

The recent decisions, taken by the Board of Governors of IIM-Indore, are being perceived as an act of defiance, as the institute had refused to comply with the HRD ministry's fee cut proposal, unlike IIM-Lucknow. The Big Three - IIM A, B and C - may be cheering IIM Indore's move, but the HRD ministry isn't amused by the stand taken by the board of directors of IIM-Indore on the fee cut issue. The board refused to toe the government's line, saying it would be bound by the apex court's decision the matter. This seems to have provoked the ministry to recall Sudarshanam.

The Ministry has tried to put its own men in the vital positions of these premier institutes. The appointment of Devi Singh, another pick-up from MDI Gurgaon, as the Director of IIM Lucknow had been one such move. Earlier, K. P. P. Nambiar, the chairman of the Board of Governors of IIM-Kozhikode, was asked to step down when he refused to bow to the HRD ministry's diktats, and replaced by A. C. Muthiah.
