November 10, 2004

FMS, Delhi, celebrating 50 years, and BBC World jointly hosted Mr. Jagdish Khattar, Managing Director, Maruti Udyog Limited at the FMS campus on 10th of November.

It was a special screening of the popular series on BBC, "Back to the floor", where Mr. Khattar joins his employees to deal with their problems and get feedback about the company from the shop floor.

The screening was preceded by a high-tea on the lawns of FMS, where Mr. Khattar was keen to interact with the students. He remembered his days at the university when he studied humanities at the St. Stephen's college and was happy to interact with students from his Alma mater, who had also come to the FMS campus.

After the screening of the episode from BBC, Mr. Khattar was involved in a lively interactive session with the students for more than two hours.

Mr. Khattar was brilliant in his ability to keep the entire audience absorbed in rapt attention for more than two hours. Mr. Khattar went on to explain how automobile manufacturing will be the main growth engine for India in the future as it has been in the past. "For every truck made, 37 jobs are created directly and indirectly," he said. He then went on to praise Indian marketing and IT skills which he thought the Japanese lacked, while he said that India needed to learn from the Japanese techniques of production and manufacturing.

He said it was his dream to see every person on Indian roads inside a four wheeler and was confident this would happen sooner than later.

The event was also attended by the dean of FMS, Dr. V. K. Bhalla, the faculty, students from colleges like St. Stephens and SRCC, and other B-schools in Delhi.

Both BBC and Mr. Khattar expressed their desire to be involved in more of such interactions with FMS.
